On 7 June 2024, the Open University of China (OUC) convened a specialised seminar on teaching reform, focusing on the "Opinions on Implementing the Comprehensive Teaching Reform for Open Education."
Attending the event were key figures from various teaching departments, relevant teaching administration departments, and the teaching affairs department. Li Song, vice president of the OUC, was also present.
During the seminar, Li Song provided detailed suggestions for revising critical components of the reform document, including teacher team development, enhancement of class advisors' capabilities, digital empowerment, learning assessment, and forward-looking reform leadership. He emphasised the need to supplement the document with reforms in public foundational courses, teaching quality assurance, and assessment system reforms.
Leaders from teaching and administration departments offered their insights on the objectives and measures outlined in the reform document. They generally agreed that the framework was robust and the measures were comprehensive. However, they proposed further enhancements in areas such as system collaboration, integrated online course development, cultural literacy enhancement, learner support services, teacher instructional capability reinforcement, increased engagement in social training and services, incorporation of teaching management reform elements, and establishment of supporting systems and regulations to ensure the reform's practicality and feasibility.
The attendees also engaged in vigorous discussions on fostering collaboration among teachers and encouraging their professional growth. They recommended that the university should provide platforms and support for teachers to engage in more face-to-face and live-streamed teaching, as well as higher-level resource development and academic exchanges.
Li Song expressed his appreciation for the input and suggestions from the participants and outlined clear strategies for the document's development and implementation. The event was chaired by Gu Xiaohua, director of the Academic Affairs Department.
