Recently, Nanyang Open University celebrated the inaugural ceremony of its first Calligraphy undergraduate programme alongside a ceremony to appoint guest professors.
The event featured an exclusive lecture by Pang Zhonghua, distinguished professor at the Open University of China (OUC). Among the prestigious attendees were Niu Tao, assistant dean of the OUC's School of Art; Dr. Wang Shaofan, an expert in the field of Calligraphy; Shang Hong, dean of the School of Humanities and Design at Henan Open University; Professor Meng Licong, vice chairman of the Henan Calligraphers Association; and Zhang Qingshan, chairperson of the Nanyang Calligraphers Association. Over 600 people participated in the event including all members of Nanyang Open University's Party committee, representatives from the Nanyang Calligraphy Association, delegates from Nanyang Seniors University's calligraphy classes, the pioneering cohort of the Calligraphy undergraduate programme, as well as specially invited guests and faculty and student representatives from Nanyang Open University.
Both Niu Tao and Zhang Qingshan delivered inspiring addresses. Representing the inaugural cohort, student Li Guangxuan expressed his gratitude and shared his enlightenment from the study of calligraphy. President Li Chunlei of Nanyang Open University concluded the event with his remarks and honoured 15 distinguished professors with their appointments.
In his engaging talk, "Teaching Calligraphy at the Invitation of the United Nations - The Cultural Confidence of the Chinese People," Professor Pang Zhonghua shared his illustrious teaching experiences at the United Nations, showcasing his passion and veneration for Chinese calligraphy. He skillfully tied in music by playing the accordion, illustrating the symbiotic relationship between calligraphy and music, treating the audience to an immersive and enriching cultural experience.
The event culminated with expert calligraphers demonstrating their artistry through spirited ink brushwork, offering live workshops and fostering interactive dialogue.
The initiation of the Calligraphy major at Nanyang Open University has been met with enthusiasm by the local students. This inaugural ceremony represents a strategic alliance among the OUC's School of Art, Henan Open University, and Nanyang Open University, aiming to bolster the Calligraphy major, refine the curriculum, and elevate educational standards. Stakeholders will leverage this opportunity to promote the growth of the Calligraphy discipline, enhance course offerings, intensify recruitment efforts, and amplify the institution's impact on education. This effort also aligns with the Ministry of Education's directives on fully integrating aesthetic education into schools, thus supporting the mission to foster a learning society and country where lifelong learning is pursued by all.
