The “A Glimpse of Teachers” Short Video Collection Activity 2020, organised by the Department of Teachers Affairs of the Ministry of Education (MOE) in cooperation with China Education Television, China Teacher Development Foundation, and China Education Development Foundation, ended recently, having collected nearly 3,000 works.
After technical screening and expert evaluation, 40 works were evaluated as award winning pieces and 90 were shortlisted. Among them, “Open University of China(OUC) Staff Against the COVID-19,” jointly completed by Wang Li, Liu Yang, and Wang Qian, teachers from the OUC’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, was included as one of the shortlisted works.
In order to celebrate the 36th Teachers' Day, in July, the MOE issued the Notice on Launching a Short Video Collection Activity for a Glimpse of Teachers in 2020, aimed at collecting short videos from education departments, different types schools at various levels, and all walks of life across the country that show the outstanding performance of teacher groups and individuals in the new era. The purpose of the activity is to thoroughly implement the spirit of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on the overall planning for the prevention and control of the COVID-19 and poverty alleviation. According to the requirements of the “Opinions of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on Comprehensively Deepening the Reform of Teachers’ Team Construction in the New Era,” the activity also aims to widely publicise and display good images of teachers in the new era, who remain committed to their work, make selfless sacrifices at their posts, and who have made outstanding achievements. It also serves the purpose of fully reflecting teachers' responsibilities in the fight against the coronavirus epidemic and alleviating poverty, and further creating a strong atmosphere of valuing morality and kindness, as well as respecting teachers and teaching in the whole society.
The OUC’s Department of Student Affairs and Teacher Development actively mobilised teachers from the OUC headquarters to participate in the activity and to show the public the good mental outlook of teachers in fighting against the epidemic and poverty alleviation. The Faculty of Agroforestry and Medicine and the Faculty of Science and Engineering, together with the OUC Experimental School, actively responded to the call, organising teachers to collect materials, create plans, shoot videos, and submit their work on time.
“OUC Staff Against the COVID-19” focuses on Mr. Wang Li, who actively responded to the call of the OUC, working on the front line of open education and adult education, implementing “cloud classroom” teaching, and reconstructing the learning path of online courses on the basis of the characteristics of students in open education. Using project- and game-based teaching methods, Wang Li introduced students to different cloud classroom activities. Since adult education students need to work during the day and study at night, it has become a normal routine for Wang Li to grade papers during the day and guide students in paper writing at night. Over the past three months, he has helped 15 adult students to complete their graduation theses. Through his actions, Wang Li has demonstrated a selfless spirit through which he remains dedicated to education and teaching, loves his students, and is always willing to make sacrifices.
Wang Li has been a teacher at the OUC’s Faculty of Science and Engineering since July 2010. His online course, Android Smartphone Programming, was launched on iCourse, a MOOC platform for Chinese universities in October 2017. To date, the course has been serving students for six semesters, with over 9,000 students signing up each term. The course was rated as an outstanding national online open course in 2018. In 2019, the Android Smartphone Programming teaching team of the OUC’s mobile app development major was selected as a high-level continuing education teaching team among universities in Beijing.
