On March 10, 2016, both the Party Branch and the Youth Committee of the Learning Resources Department of the Open University of China (OUC) worked together to hold a student aid event called “New School Bags, New Hope.” Initiated by Xinjiang Daily and the Xinjiang White Swan assistance network, the event has donated schoolbag packages(including stationery, dictionaries, toys, etc.) valued at 39 yuan to children from poor families in the rural and pastoral areas of Xinjiang during the new school term.

The event raised a total of 15,054 yuan, enough to pay for 386 new bag packages for children in rural and pastoral areas around Wusu city,Xinjiang autonomous region. All donations have been remitted to the Xinjiang Youth Development Foundation for the purchasing and distribution of school bags.
A total of 257 tutors from OUC headquarters, as well as branches in Liaoning and Shanghai,made donations either by cash or through the latest mobile payment technology, such as WeChat, Alipay, and other platforms. Many tutors even donated 10 bags at a time. When the Adult Education Department of Xinjiang Karamay Radio and Television University learned about the event,they immediately donated 31 bags, and there are many more touching stories like this.
The public student aid programme “New School Bags, New Hope” was launched through joint efforts from Xinjiang Daily’s Tianshan Public Welfare Programme and the special White Swan Fund of Xinjiang Youth Development Foundation(Xinjiang White Swan assistance network).From 2012 onwards, it has been devoted to donating school bags to children from poor families in rural and pastoral areas of Xinjiang. Since its launch, a total of six events have been organized in more than 70 schools across Xinjiang, fundraising for and distributing 4,415 bag packages valued at a total of 172,185 yuan.
