Zhu Xiaoqi, a senior engineer, retired in 2020 and has since taken courses in micro-filmmaking, recitation, self-improvement for beginners, family story writing, and smartphone short video creation at the Open University of China (OUC, also known as Seniors University of China, SUC).
Q: Could you share the reasons behind your decision to study at the SUC?
A: After retiring in July 2020, I sought courses that were both interesting and practical. Amidst the numerous schools available, I stumbled upon the SUC's admission brochure online. Its strong faculty and diverse course offerings convinced me to enrol in five classes immediately, including recitation, self-improvement, family story writing, and micro-filmmaking. I was eager for each day at school. It's no exaggeration to say that the SUC, a university for seniors, is envied by the youth across the internet. I take great pride in the SUC!
Q: What is the most valuable thing you've gained from your studies?
A: Many of my young friends inquire about the SUC after seeing the videos I've made during my studies. Some even express a desire to attend themselves or enrol their parents. My short video skills, honed at the SUC, have allowed me to share our vibrant campus life, showcasing the rich experiences of Chinese seniors to an international audience and promoting Chinese culture.
At the SUC, I've not only acquired a variety of knowledge but also expanded my social circle, making many friends and broadening my horizons. In 2022, I was honoured with the titles of "Capital Citizen Learning Star" and "Common People Learning Star," a recognition that belongs to all seniors.
Additionally, I founded a recitation club at the university, where we gather weekly to practice and sometimes attend national recitation events. Our club aims to express love through voice, conveying emotions and reciting classics. Each session is recorded and shared, showing our growth in grace and the enrichment of our senior lives. Just as young people have diverse clubs in university, we too share joy and classics in the clubs at the SUC.
Q: On the occasion of the OUC's 45th anniversary, what blessings would you like to extend to the university?
A: I am deeply grateful to the OUC (SUC) for providing such an excellent learning platform for seniors. I wish the SUC continued success in nurturing talented professionals for society and extend my heartfelt congratulations on its 45th anniversary!
