The month-long Calligraphy & Painting Exhibition of works by senior students of the calligraphy and painting class at Gansu Radio & TV University (Gansu RTVU), part of a series of activities for the “Activity Week of National Lifelong Learning”, opened at Gansu RTVU on 25 October, 2018. Wang Xuqiang, vice president of the university, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.
The exhibition has received considerable attention from university leaders, and teachers of the class gave careful guidance to the students, who were enthusiastic about participating. Many of them submitted their work, and 63 works were selected: 36 calligraphy works and 27 paintings. The calligraphy covered styles of Chinese characters such as the Zhuan, Li, Xing, Kai and Cao, as well as a variety of genres. The paintings were both realistic and abstract; some were strongly inked, some lightly; some were novel, and others colourful. Many of the painters were beginners, with less than a year of study behind them, and while their paintings may have been somewhat immature, every work represented the painter’s best efforts, and conveyed how hard he or she had worked at it.
The winners of the 2nd session of the community education literary and artistic achievements of the China Adult Education Association were announced at the opening ceremony. Wei Dianping, representating the award-winning students, gave a speech. Ma Xiuying, a student, shared her experiences learning calligraphy and painting. The exhibition also invited Cao Weidong, member of the council of the Gansu Lanshan Print Society, and an associate research fellow; Chen Hua, a teacher; and Qiao Junsheng, an instructor of the calligraphy and painting class, who painted on site and was applauded by viewers.
Those attending, including university staff, teachers and students, were greatly inspired by the participants to continue to study and work hard, and to take part in national continuing education.
