On the morning of 28th September, 2018, the opening ceremony of the Fujian Lifelong Education Day & National Lifelong Learning Week took place at Fujian RTVU. These activities were set up by Fujian province in accordance with the guidelines issued by the 19th NPC for national lifelong continuing education, and were sponsored by the Fujian Education Bureau and organised by Fujian RTVU.

Over 100 people attended the opening ceremony, including Yang Gensheng, vice chair of the 11th CPPCC of Fujian province, chairman of the Fujian Association of Senior Universities, and president of Fujian Senior University; Fujian RTVU leaders including president Wu Guorong, deputy secretary of the CPC committee, Ma Chengbin, ,vice president Chen Zhanhong, Wang Youxin, secretary of the Committee for Discipline Inspection ; Ma Yuliang, vice president of Fujian Senior University; Zheng Chenglin, deputy inspector of the Fujian Department of Civil Affairs; Zhang Wendong, director of the Vocational Education and Adult Education Department of the Fujian Education Bureau; investigator Liu Huiyong; Fuzhou Polytechnic president Li Qiubin; leaders from the Fujian Office of the Elderly, Fuzhou Education Bureau, Fuzhou Community University, Nanping Community University, Gulou Community University and Luoyuan Community University; and representatives of the Fujian 2018 "Common People Learning Stars". The ceremony was presided over by vice president Shen Guanghui.

Yang Gensheng pointed out in his speech that Party committees and governments at all levels have given tremendous support to lifelong education in Fujian, and indeed nationwide. This has led to great progress for the province in this area, and National Lifelong Learning Week is not only a showcase of the achievements of each region of Fujian province, but also of the overall development of lifelong education in the province.

He emphasised that the theme of this year's National Lifelong Learning Week is the promotion of lifelong learning nationwide, understanding of its development, and the contributions individuals can make to it.

Wu Guorong gave a basic overview of the school and its recent achievements in lifelong education. The Fujian Lifelong Education Credit Bank, Fujian Lifelong Education Service Centre, Fujian Digital Lifelong Education Big Data Research Institute, and Fujian Online Open University for Older Adults have been set up at Fujian RTVU, and contributing to the improvement of lifelong education in the province. He said that Fujian RTVU would take this day as an opportunity to promote its achievements and connect them to national trends in lifelong education.

Zhang Wendong awarded plaques from the Fujian Education Credit Bank and Fujian Online Open University for Older Adults to Fujian RTVU. The leaders also launched an online app for the Fujian lifelong-learning and Fujian national lifelong-education credit-bank website.

Six Fujian "Common People Learning Stars" went onstage to accept the award, with Sa Bengui and Li Yufang delivering acceptance speeches on their behalf. 89-year-old Sa Bengui has been studying since his retirement, and truly demonstrates that "one is never too late to learn."

After the ceremony, the Fujian Online Open University for Older Adults was officially opened, and its first students began classes at the Zuohai campus. Leaders visited the photography, calligraphy, vocal music and tea-art classes there, as well as the Fujian Digital Lifelong Education Big Data Research Institute.
