Neijiang RTVU opens new“Community College”column
Taking a walk after dinner and reading the electronic newspaper is a habit for many residents in the Xianglong Community of the Central City of Neijiang. Liu Xia is one of those residents. Recently, LuXia went to read the news from Neijiang Daily’s outdoor multimedia newspaper system, located outside the community, just as she always did. She was surprised to find a new “Community College” column added to the electronic display panel. For Liu Xia however, the term ‘community college’ is not strange. On February 3 last year, the first learning centre for community education in Neijiang established by Neijiang RTVU was inaugurated in the Xianglong community where she lived. She also participated in many activities organized by the Learning Centre for Community Education. LiuXia clicked to read about activities and learned that, since 2015,Neijiang RTVU has organized more than 20 community education activities that were down to earth and would benefit the people, including“Computer Literacy Class for the Elderly,”“Hometown of the Yangtze River, Stories of the Elderly,” “Food King: BeanJelly Comes into the Community,” “Chinese Painting and Calligraphy,” “Classroom at Four Thirty,” “On Filial Piety,”“Earthquake and Fire Prevention Drilling,” and so on. More than 5,000community residents participated in them. The positive effect of the activities has resulted in a high degree of satisfaction from residents and won praise from the general public. “When the garlic germinates, can we still eat it,” “How to maintain an electric water heater to extend its life,”and “Methods to escape from a fire”all offered practical and valuable education. After careful reading, she found that the “Community College”column in Neijiang Daily’s outdoor multimedia newspaper system includes a variety of practical knowledge. She has grown accustomed to taking time to read the column every day.
The Opinions on the Implementation of Promoting the Construction of a Lifelong Education and Learning Society, introduced by the municipal government not long ago, clearly mandate taking full advantage of the RTVUs resources and using Neijiang Community College (Neijiang Community College and Neijiang RTVU share the same set of facilities and staff) as a lead. The Opinions propose establishing a community education network at four levels: city, county, town (township), and community (village). The aim is to construct a learning platform for community education that “everyone can learn at, anytime and anywhere.”The platform should use distance education to develop community resident- and minor-oriented learning activities that provide education on the democratic and legal system, citizen morality, science, culture, and occupational skills, to provide multi-level occupational training and lifelong learning services with a variety of content and in various forms to the public. In cooperation with relevant departments, the platform should improve the comprehensive quality of urban and rural residents’ skills and knowledge, and innovate social management. Lastly, it should drive the construction of a lifelong education system and learning society, and promote social harmony.
