Recently, the Inner Mongolia School for the Disabled under the supervision of The Open University of China (OUC) hosted a Webpage Design and Construction Competition for Digital Media and Production. On November 23, relevant experts were organized to evaluate the entries.
The focus of the event was to further explore case studies and practical teaching of specialized courses for the disabled by combining both practice and interest. The reform of training and teaching models has been deepened in order to improve the practical abilities of disabled students and to promote learning for practical use.
A total of about 60 people, including graduates from the school, participated in the competition. Eight works designed by 23 designers, all of whom are disabled students, entered the final. The contestants were organized into small groups, who then explained their design ideas in PowerPoint form, made a five-minute presentation and gave a short speech. One first prize winner, two second prize winners and five third prize winners were selected.
In July 2007, the Inner Mongolia Radio and TV University (Inner Mongolia RTVU) collaborated with the Autonomous Regional Disabled Persons’ Federation to found, with the help of the OUC School for the Disabled, tutorial centres in Baotou, Hinggan League, Chifeng, Ordos and Xilingol League. Today, three majors – Digital Media Design and Construction, Accounting and Social Work – are offered as part of the undergraduate and junior college programmes. Since enrollment started in the spring semester of 2008, a total of 563 students have been enrolled and 320 have graduated.
The CPC Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regional Committee and the Regional People’s Government have given strong support to the development of RTVU disabled education. In February 2009 and August 2010, the CPC Committee and Government of Inner Mongolia successively issued the “Opinions for Implementation from the CPC Inner Mongolia Committee and the Government to Promote Disabled Education Cause" and “Notice on Opinions for Implementation to Further Accelerate the Development of Special Education Causes”. The goal of “accelerating the development of education for the disabled” has been clearly underscored, and the “positive development of the OUC Inner Mongolia School for the Disabled, in order to create the conditions to set up new majors, to expand enrollment and to create equal amount tuition-compensation for disabled learners obtaining graduation certificates” has been proposed.
In December 2009, the Inner Mongolia School was chosen as one of the three OUC schools for the disabled in the first batch of demonstration tutorial centres (schools). The China Disabled Persons’ Federation and China Central Radio and TV University (CCRTVU) respectively allocated RMB 100,000 to support infrastructure construction and follow-up project construction.
The people in charge of the Inner Mongolia School for the Disabled have indicated that the school will continue to enhance connotative construction, improve overall teaching and service quality, offer better learner support for the disabled, and uphold their social responsibility to promote equal access to education and build a harmonious learning society in Mongolia.
