On 20 September 2014, Gansu Radio and TV University (Gansu RTVU) went to Jingchuan County to carry out the “Unity Activity” event, to promote open education in the countryside and the communities. Many people from the surrounding countryside attended the event.

With the advancement of "uniting villages and households for a better living of the people" (union action), the Party Committee of Gansu RTVU took the initiative to serve rural economic development, as well as addressing the needs of villagers and households, by leveraging their advantages to conduct a number of activities, including: providing food and books, actively promoting the CPC’s policies, bringing practical agricultural technology into the community, donating books and office equipment, and organizing cultural performances and activities.

Bai Yu, Deputy County Mayor of Jingchuan, Pingliang City, and Kou Cunsheng, Vice Chairman of Jingchuan County Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Gonference, have extended their gratitude on behalf of Jingchuan County Committee and Jingchuan County Government to Gansu RTVU in helping the village increase production volume, improve infrastructure conditions, improve the environment and village appearance, and create a more cultural environment.

Party Secretary of Gansu RTVU, Zhu Weiguo commented that, in its next phase the “Unity Activity ” will continue to leverage the advantages of Gansu RTVU’s staff resources, the professional teachers and their experience in distance education. Together with the efforts of cadres, Jingming town, and Jingchuan county, Gansu RTVU will focus on using technology to improve the ability of farmers to prosper; promote the construction of rural civilization; foster the prosperity of rural areas by intensifying agricultural development; and improve the environment of rural areas. Through this they will achieve a "double harvest" in terms of both material and spiritual civilization.

During the “Connecting with children in rural areas through books” book donation campaign, Gansu RTVU donated over 1,000 books worth RMB 180,000 to Jingming Central Primary School in Jingchuan County, RTV rural book house, and primary schools in Zhuangtou Village and Lianjiaping Village of Jingming Town. In addition, Gansu RTVU also donated 10 sets of desks and chairs to two primary schools in the village.

The cultural performance started with a dance called "Dunhuang Relics". The performance consisted of dancing, solos, instrumental performances, and songs accompanied by dances. The actors and actresses performed the rich cultural content passionately. "Today's theatrical performances have played an immeasurable role in promoting the development of our village, building a new atmosphere, creating a community, and enriching cultural life in rural areas..." the simple words of the people express their desire for culture.

Zhu Weiguo also made a field investigation into the progress of the “Unity Activity” in the whole Zhuangtou village. In Lianjiaping village, he chatted with local farmer Yan Qiao’e, who has a great deal of experience in livestock and poultry. He also visited the two primary schools in the village.

Since the implementation of the "Unity Activity ", the Party Committee of Gansu RTVU has been adhering to and implementing the deployment of and requirements for promotion of the programme made by the provincial Party committee. Gansu RTVU has focused on six major tasks in combination with the practical conditions of the villages with project construction as the starting point. Over the past two years, Gansu RTVU has accumulated and invested over RMB 7 million in the "Unity Activity", using the efforts of all involved to significantly improve infrastructure conditions, revitalize the villages, and enhance living standards.
