On May 5th 2014, Yin Yulong, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and Chief Scientist of the Institute of Subtropical Agriculture at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was invited to give a series of lectures on “Healthy Cultivation and Food Safety” by Hunan Radio and TV University (RTVU).
This series of lectures aims to accelerate the construction of the “one college student per village” programme and curriculum resources, improve the quality of teaching, and broaden the horizons of teachers and students. Later, video recordings of the series will be edited into four sessions that will make up a standard TV course, which will be broadcast for the benefit of students in the “one college student per village” programme nationwide.
Yin Yulong first shared the achievements of scientific research and experience in the field under the topic of “nutrition regulation in healthy and efficient pig reproduction”. He began by recounting a vicious event and contamination accident – in March 2013, many dead pigs were found floating in the Songjiang water area of Huangpu River in Shanghai, and he went on to explain the problems of environmental pollution and product quality safety brought on by large scale farming and put forward measures on how to solve these problems.
Yin Yulong also introduced some advanced scientific technology such as barrier-removal technology (two-way solid fermentation), pig-raising through fermentation bed technology, the technology of quick fermentation of organic waste to produce zoological organic fertilizer, recycling technology of myriophyllum verticillatum, combined with the typical cases in the practice of breed cultivation, summarized some advanced academic knowledge including the nutrition regulation of enteric microorganisms in relation to the gut barrier, the influence of the gut barrier function on the growth and health of animals, the influence of arginine on intestinal micro-ecology and immunologic function and integration of mother and young animals.
Teachers and students of majors such as animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, public administration in villages, rural economic management of “one college student per village” programme from the teaching school directly subordinate to Changsha Branch of Hunan RTVU, RTVUs of Wangcheng District, Xiangyin District, and others interacted with Yin Yulong on topics like healthful cultivation models and Chinese herbal medicine as additives. Yin answered them one by one and called on his fellows in the circle of livestock cultivation to join in the national technology innovation alliance of the swine industry, making contributions to the promotion of the development and innovation of the national swine industry’s industry-university-research cooperation.
Yin Yulong, born in the Taoyuan County of Hunan Province, is an academician with CAE, a talent connected with the project “One Hundred Talent” of CAS, executive member of the International Society of Food, Agriculture and Environment (Finland), associate editor of Journal of Food, Agriculture & Environment and African Journal of Food Science, editorial board member of International Scholarly Research Network (ISRN) Veterinary Science, Journal of Microbiology and Antimicrobials and Asian-Australasian Journal of Animal Science and so on, President of the National Technology Innovation League of the Swine Industry, Executive Director of the Animal Nutrition Branch of the Chinese Association of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine and Vice President of Chinese Research Society of Microelement and Food Cycle. Academician Yin Yulong is an international well-known expert on animal nutrition, and has made excellent achievements in the field of pig’s absorption and metabolism of nutriment, especially in the fields of the transport mechanism of amino acid, and nutrition regulation in healthy livestock cultivation, attracting much attention from the overseas and domestic colleagues.
