A few days ago, Pan’an Branch School of Zhejiang Radio and TV University (RTVU) organized more than 30 sophomore gardening technology and agricultural economy management majors. The students conducted their field work at the Hangzhou Flower Nursery and Pipa Bay Ecological Farm.

The Hangzhou Flower Nursery covers an area of 400 hectares. It is famous for the various flowers and bonsai trees its organization produces, collects and preserves. It has 10 sections for bonsai, orchids, Chinese roses and other plants, and overall, has more than 2,000 kinds of flowers and bonsai tree.

Under the guidance of the instructor, students encountered many kinds of flowers and trees that were previously unknown to them and acquired knowledge of floristry, including soil preparation, removal and replacement, as well as sowing, growing seedlings, and planting. Furthermore, they also learned the steps and methods of green space flower layout, planning and design.

At Pipa Bay Ecological Farm, local managers taught the students about the methods and experiences of modern organic agriculture development. The students mainly visited modern and traditional agriculture exhibition areas, as well as organic pipa gardens, learning about organic agricultural production methods from both modern and traditional perspectives. Through their efforts, they felt the charm of organic life. Moreover, the modest learners acquired the techniques of bonsai cultivation from the technicians and took part in experiential activities, such as growing flowers and plants. Walking in the ecological district with a thousand acres of organic orchards, a hundred acres of lotus ponds and thousands of fruits and vegetables giving off their own unique fragrances, the students fully experienced the smell of an agricultural garden and the atmosphere of nature. They reported that, through production practice and field visits, they had further clarified their professional goals, enriched their theoretical knowledge, improved their practical skills, and benefited in numerous other ways.

It is reported that this practical activity, in line with the requirements of the OUC’s Outline of Professional Centralized Internships and Practical Training, is an activity of production practice that everyone participates in, specially organized for the students who are about to graduate. Next, the learners will designate the topics of their graduation assignments on the basis of this production practice, then collect and examine resources, and complete reports on production practice for their final theses.
