The finale of Henan RTVU’s law major case design and analysis competition was held on November 30, 2013. This competition was divided into two stages: submissions and on-site. Students submitted a total of 201 works, among which 60 works were awarded first prize, second prize, third prize or excellence awards.

Three teams composed of nine students and their advisers entered the on-site competition.

The judges for the on-site competition were: Wang Guofeng, Doctor of Law and Professor at Henan University of Economics and Law; Hou Hongtao, Doctor of Law and Henan Province High Court Judge; and Yu Guizhi, Professor at Henan RTVU Law Department. During the on-site competition, the students’ arguments were targeted and reasoned and they were greeted with much applause. After a keen competition, the team from Luoyang RTVU won the on-site competition, with two other teams from provincial RTVUs winning second and third place.

This on-site competition broke away from the traditional pro-con debate format and adopted a new “tripartite confrontation” format. As judge Wang Guofeng commented, this on-site competition was “particular and unprecedented”.

The competition embodies the deepening reform of practical teaching methods with Henan RTVU’s law major, which aims to teach students how to link theory and practice and apply legal knowledge in practical situations. Award-winning case works are selected and used as the materials for case-based and practical teaching.

A related principle from Henan RTVU said that the competition not only enhances the students’ ability to think creatively and apply legal knowledge; it also promotes the construction and applicability of teaching resources. Through the organization and implementation of the competition, the School of Humanities and Law also gained experience in how to implement practical teaching and carry out teaching reform, so as to harness the systematic advantages of RTVU teaching.
