The “Brush-and-Ink China” Chinese Calligraphy Competition, part of the 7th Chinese Classics Recitation, Writing, and Speaking Contest, organised by the Ministry of Education and the National Language Commission, concluded successfully. Faculty and students from the Calligraphy major of the Open University of China (OUC) delivered an outstanding performance in this national competition, achieving remarkable results in both the Beijing preliminary rounds and the national finals. This year’s accomplishments mark the university’s best performance since its participation in the contest, fully showcasing the effectiveness of its calligraphy education and talent cultivation.
In the Beijing preliminary round organised by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and the Beijing Municipal Language Commission, eight students from the Calligraphy major of the OUC Experimental College captured one first prize, three second prizes and four third prizes in the university student group. OUC was honoured with the “Outstanding Team Award”.

OUC Honoured with the “Outstanding Team Award”
WANG Shaofan, associate Professor at the OUC School of Art and supervising teacher of the Experimental College, won the first prize in the teacher group of the Beijing preliminary and was named “Outstanding Instructor Award”. In the national finals, WANG went on to receive the second prize in the teacher group, becoming the only university teacher in Beijing to win the national-level award in this category and showcasing the professional expertise and pedagogical teaching demeanour of OUC faculty.
The outstanding achievements of both teachers and students represent a concentrated display of the teaching quality and talent-training effectiveness of the OUC Calligraphy major, and mark a new milestone in its development. The honours reflect the diligent practice and relentless pursuit of excellence by teachers and students alike, as well as the University’s long-standing commitment to educational reform and to fostering practical and innovative ability.
In the years ahead, the University will continue to adhere to the principle of “promoting teaching and learning through competitions”, deepen its investment in calligraphy education, cultivate more calligraphy professionals endowed with both moral integrity and artistic excellence, and contribute the strength of the open university to the creative development of fine traditional Chinese culture.
