On 19 October, the Open University of China (OUC) hosted the "2024 Academic Seminar on Contemporary Chinese Marxist Theory Studies" in Beijing, with the theme of "Deepening Reform and Chinese Modernisation”.

This event aimed to thoroughly study and implement the guiding principles of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the National Conference on Education. Wang Qiming, secretary of the Party Committee and president of the OUC, delivered a speech, while Xu Mingjun, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the OUC, presided over the opening ceremony.

The event was attended by the entire leadership team of the OUC, all faculty members from the School of Marxism, and representatives from the Marxism schools within the Open University system. Esteemed guests included Zhao Changmao, former vice president of the Party School of the Central Committee of the CPC; Li Zhongjie, former deputy director and professor of the Party History Research Centre of the CPC Central Committee; Zhang Feng, former vice president and professor of the Central Institute of Socialism; and Wang Huaichao, former deputy dean of education at the Party School of the Central Committee of the CPC and distinguished professor at the OUC.

Wang Qiming stated that the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee sounded the clarion call for paving the way for Chinese modernisation through further comprehensive and in-depth reform. General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech at the Second Education Conference of the New Era provided a strategic blueprint for building China into a leading country in education of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Bringing together Marxist theorists and scholars for academic exchange at the OUC represents a convergence of ideas and wisdom, as well as a significant step in implementing the guiding principles of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee and the National Conference on Education. This seminar not only seeks to deepen study on contemporary Chinese Marxist Theory , but also supports the OUC in understanding its new mission and tasks in the new historical context. By leveraging digital technology to empower lifelong education and serve a learning society and country, the OUC aims to demonstrate new responsibilities and inspire new actions, providing valuable theoretical guidance and practical insights. The OUC will use this seminar as an opportunity to further study and implement the guiding principles of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee and the National Conference on Education, contributing to the development of a leading country in education, a learning society and country.

Keynote speeches were delivered by Professors Zhao Changmao, Li Zhongjie, Zhang Feng, and Wang Huaichao, focusing on the seminar's theme. Over 20 experts and scholars from various institutions, including the Party School of the Central Committee of the CPC (National Academy of Governance), the Institute of Party History and Literature of the CPC Central Committee, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Central Institute of Socialism, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Wuhan University, Nanjing University, Lanzhou University, Northeastern University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Central University of Finance and Economics, Yunnan University, Capital Normal University, the Studies on Party and Government journal office, and the OUC participated in the discussions.

The experts and scholars agreed that the current and upcoming periods are pivotal for advancing the development of a strong nation and national rejuvenation through Chinese modernisation. It is crucial to further study, publicise, and implement General Secretary Xi Jinping's new thoughts, viewpoints, and assertions on comprehensive deepening reform. A profound understanding of the significance, goals, and requirements of further comprehensive deepening reform and promoting Chinese modernisation is required. With the spirit of driving nails, we should ensure the implementation of reforms and transform the strategic plan of further comprehensive deepening reform into a strong force for promoting Chinese modernisation.
