The Open University of China (OUC) recently held a two-day workshop from 21st to 22nd December 2023, aimed at enhancing the skills in new media content creation, operation, and communication.
This event took place at the State Key Laboratory of Media Convergence and Communication (MCC) at the Communication University of China (CUC). Co-hosted by Xu Qi, an associate researcher at the New Media Research Institute of MCC at the CUC, and Cheng Qian, deputy director of the Learning Resources Department at the OUC, the workshop welcomed a total of 30 participants.
During the workshop, Professor Guo Xiaoke, deputy director of the MCC at CUC, shared his insights on "Challenges and Opportunities of International Communication." He elaborated on the challenges, opportunities, and practical measures that China should adopt for international communications, focusing on defining the concept of international communication, the three major characteristics of China’s international communication, and key research topics in this field.
Professor Pan Kewu of the School of Theatre, Film, and Television at CUC presented his insights on "Short Video: Communication of Physical Presence." He delved into the core aspects of short video communication, covering topics like image empowerment, narrative features, trust mechanisms, and AI attributes. Through a range of case studies, he examined subjects including business models based on short videos, trust models, and perspectives on AI-generated short videos.
Dong Jiaqi, a senior operations expert at Sina Weibo, recently gave an insightful talk titled "Weibo New Media Operation Practice for the Post-2000 Generation." In his presentation, he provided a comprehensive overview of Sina Weibo, delving into user profiles, the management of trending topics on Weibo campus, and the underlying mechanisms of Weibo's hot search feature. By presenting case studies of new media operations within universities, he demonstrated effective strategies for engaging young users on new media platforms. He underscored the significance of staying attuned to popular topics, user interests, and the necessity of refined, detail-oriented operations. This approach, he argued, is key to creating a harmonious synergy among various accounts.
In addition to attending presentations, participants also had the chance to explore the Media Centre and Media Museum at the CUC. They engaged in detailed discussions on topics including the production and promotion of new learning resources, APP publicity and operations, as well as project collaboration.
Over the course of the two-day workshop, participants unanimously reported gaining a thorough understanding of video resource creation in the new era, principles of new media operation, practical experiences in international communication, and the emerging trends in learning resource construction. They expressed a keen intention to apply the knowledge acquired from the workshop in their future endeavours, aiming to contribute significantly to the development, collection, and dissemination of high-quality learning resources for the OUC.
