Newspapers such as Guangming Daily and China Youth Daily have reported on a recent event titled “The Past, Present and Future of High-energy Physics in China,” staged by the “Science and China” cloud lecture.
The event, simultaneously carried out in both online and offline formats, was co-sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ (CAS, CASAD) Bureau of Academic Divisions, the National Science Library of CAS, the CAS Institute of High Energy Physics, and the Open University of China (OUC). It was hosted by Zhan Wenlong, a member of the CAS.
Zhan and four other members of the CAS involved in the field of high-energy physics, Wang Yifang, Li Tibei, Chen Hesheng and Gao Yuanning, held a roundtable discussion on the development of high-energy physics. Over a hundred teachers and students from universities, colleges and research institutes such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Institute of High Energy Physics of CAS, attended the event offline. Thirty-six media outlets, including China Daily, China Media Group Mobile, TingTing FM from the Beijing Radio and Television Station, and Bilibili, live-streamed the event and gained 4.7 million views.
To bring high-quality popular science content to more people, the CAS Bureau of Academic Divisions (CAS, CASAD), the CAS National Science Library, and the OUC have launched the “Science and China” cloud lecture in 2023. Members of the CAS and other experts hold popular science events ranging from lectures and dialogues to group discussions and live-streamed events. The goal is to popularise scientific knowledge, advocate scientific methods, spread scientific thinking, and promote the spirit of science.
In February 2012, the CAS Bureau of Academic Divisions and the OUC co-planned the project “Science and China: Video Lectures by Academicians and Experts”. The event invited academicians and experts in the field of science and technology to disseminate scientific ideas and serve teachers, students and the public at large via the OUC platform. The project has produced 746 episodes so far, lasting 18,650 minutes and featuring 73 academicians and 191 experts. The project has won 15 awards at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, including the Thematic Publication Project by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) Central Committee, and the National Key Publishing Planning Project. It has also received funding from the National Publication Foundation.
