A special seminar was recently given by Professor Pang Zhonghua, a distinguished visiting professor at the Open University of China (OUC) and a famous hard-pen calligrapher in China.
The seminar was sponsored by the OUC and co-organised by Hainan Open University (Hainan Community Education College) and the OUC School of Art. Attendees included staff members from Hainan Open University, older adult learners from Hainan Community Education College, and enthusiastic students of calligraphy.
Pang introduced the history of the development of calligraphy and demonstrated his “joyful teaching pedagogy”. This involves the interpretation of calligraphy through music by using different strokes to represent musical notes. He also played the accordion to show eight strokes in regular script. Pang said the pathway to one’s success is dependent on three necessary requirements – passion, innovation and skill. He discussed his own personal growth and experience to support his argument. The teachers and students onsite were deeply impressed by Pang for his lecturing style and charming personality.
The OUC School of Art places great importance on gathering together famous teachers and experts to provide an aesthetic education to the public. The School of Art is planning to boost efforts to invite more famous artists to offer seminars, lectures and other activities to serve the OUC education system, promote artistic accomplishments and improve the cultural standards of OUC students.
