On 15-16 March 2023, the Open University of China (OUC) held a seminar in Xiang Tan, a city in Hunan Province, to discuss and share ideas about enrolment.

Li Song, a member of the Party Committee and vice president of the OUC, was in attendance. He was joined by staff from the Hunan Open University, various personnel in charge of enrolment, and over 30 people from the OUC Academic Affairs Department. The event was presided over by Gu Xiaohua, director of OUC Academic Affairs Department.

Li said the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China will be studied and implemented for the first time this year. He added that 2023 is also a crucial year for the 14th Five-Year Plan. The mission and responsibility of the OUC is to provide fair and accessible educational opportunities, and Li said the OUC should adhere to the principle of developing education that meets the people’s expectations put forward by General Secretary Xi Jinping.

The participants attending the OUC seminar held exchanges on enrolment in 2023. They discussed the establishment and management of study centres outside the OUC system, including how to manage them according to different categories.

The participants also introduced a series of proposals about enrolment, such as how to optimise the running of schools. They reached a better understanding into the OUC’s strategy of “Creating Excellence and Improving Quality” in degree education, and gained confidence in the development of digital universities led by the OUC headquarters. The participants said they would continue to contribute to reforms in education and teaching by strengthening cooperation while pushing ahead with a pilot project on enrolment that better meets the needs of students.
