A few days ago, the Open University of China (OUC) approved 14 institutions, including Qingdao Community University, to be among the first batch of the OUC experimental centres for community education, and approved 39 institutions, including Taiyuan Community University, Shanxi, to be among the first batch of the OUC experimental bases for community education, in order to: better study the role that community education plays in the construction of the lifelong education system, better understand how distance education can promote lifelong learning for all, thoroughly explore new teaching models, share and expand resources for community education, and to actively promote the advancement of the study and implementation of community education. Vigorously promoting the implementation of community education lays the groundwork for the pursuit of the goal: “perfecting the lifelong education system and building a learning society”, put forward at the 18th CPC National Party Congress. It also serves to expand the teaching fields and service functions of the OUC, to better complete education services, and to work toward the construction of a harmonious society.

In the future, each of the experimental centres (bases) for community education will play a leading role, while the OUC will manage their various tasks, regularly inspect and supervise the staff, and provide corresponding support services, all of which will serve for boosting the development of community education in China’s rural and urban areas.
