Co-hosted by the Central Civilization Office and Chinese Civilization Network, “Best Chinese People” Awards in May have been announced recently. Lan Suwen, a student of Wencheng Branch of Zhejiang Radio & TV University (Zhejiang RTVU) who enrolled in the autumn of 2011 and majored in law, was selected as one of the “Most Dedicated Chinese People”.
An ordinary rural postman at the Huangtan Branch of Wencheng Post Office, although 50-year-old Lan Suwen is not a talkative person, he always greets villagers with a genuine smile. He is one of the only regular visitors for elderly people in the Huangtan area, having visited every day for 34 years. After all this time Lan Suwen is still the same person going about his duties. He has now become a symbol of warmth for the villagers.
Over the last 34 years, it is estimated that Lan Suwen has covered a distance equivalent to circling the equator seven times. Wencheng Post Office leaves stamps with rural families and requires postmen to use them to record their work attendance everyday. These records are checked on a regular basis to guarantee their accuracy. Over the past three decades, Lan Suwen has never neglected his duty. No matter how terrible the weather conditions or how many letters he has to send, he always delivers them on time. Now he earned the affectionate nickname “mountain wild goose” and was conferred the honorary “Moving Wenzhou” Award in 2012.
Delivering letters in rural areas has become an indispensable part of Lan Suwen’s daily life. He says: “I have made up my mind to continue to work as a postman and I will try my best to serve the people in remote mountain areas.”
