Recently, the results of the selection of outstanding alumni of the Open University of China (OUC) were announced, recognising 328 alumni from various industries across the country.
These individuals, with accomplishments as their foundation and technology as their wings, demonstrate resilience, confidence, and a pragmatic, enterprising spirit, writing a unique chapter of progress of the OUC people. From today on, the stories of some alumni will be selected for sharing. By reviewing their outstanding deeds and listening to their life insights, the OUC’s achievements in talent development over the last 45 years are highlighted.
Li Hong enrolled in the undergraduate Law programme at the School for the Air Force of the Open University of China (OUC) in March 2021. Currently, he serves as a second-class sergeant major in the Southern Theatre Command Air Force. He was honoured as an "Outstanding Sergeant of the Armed Forces" by the Central Military Commission and received the third prize of the Outstanding Talent Award for Non-Commissioned Officers. Moreover, he has been successively recognised as an "Outstanding Communist Party Member" by his unit, the Theatre Air Force, and the Air Force, and has been awarded third-class merit citations twice.
Enhancing military skills and standing out with professional competence
In nearly two decades of combat readiness duty, he has always carried a strong sense of responsibility, closely following every situation. In 2021, during a live military confrontation exercise organised by the Air Force, in order to successfully complete the support tasks, he led other combat support personnel to overcome numerous adverse factors such as weather and environment. Utilising his spare time, he trained intensively day and night and made great efforts to solve technical problems. Eventually, his unit won the first place in the exercise with a large margin, and he was recognised as an "Early Warning Elite" by the Air Force.
In 2022, he represented his unit in a higher-level skills competition for on-the-job training. Once again, as the "Number One Operator," he performed exceptionally, and his unit won the first place in practical combat exercises. In the same year, due to his outstanding comprehensive abilities, he was awarded the title of Advanced Individual in Network Electronic Warfare and Early Warning Detection across the armed forces. Despite his numerous honours, he often felt regretful for not having the opportunity to study in a traditional higher education institution.
In March 2021, in order to better fulfil his responsibilities, he actively participated in the undergraduate Law programme at the OUC’s School for the Air Force. While working diligently, he strived to improve his educational qualifications. He proactively learned legal knowledge, further strengthened his legal awareness, and continuously broadened his horizons and enhanced his vision. In 2022, he received a scholarship from the OUC.
Diligent training and research, with significant achievements
Li Hong has conducted in-depth research on professional principles, equipment mechanisms, and tactical methods, and has developed unique insights. He has participated in the compilation of tactical manuals for various types of equipment and has published several theoretical research articles in military publications and core journals.
In 2023, he organised the top professionals in his field to participate in a competition of the Theatre Air Force and won the first place. In the same year, he was once again recognised as an "Outstanding Sergeant of the Armed Forces" by the Central Military Commission.
Forging ahead through sacrifice and dedication
When personnel were urgently needed on the challenging frontline of a remote island, Li Hong proactively applied to his superiors and resolutely gave up his comfortable city life to work on the island far from the inland areas. In this unassuming commitment and ordinary position, Li Hong has achieved remarkable results, winning unanimous praise from his fellow soldiers and becoming a role model for them.
In August 2021, a television station in Guangdong conducted a special interview on his outstanding deeds. In the same year, he was selected as an advanced model in the seventh "Dream Chaser of Southern Frontier" by the Southern Theatre Command Air Force. In recent years, he has been successively recognised as an "Outstanding Communist Party Member" by the Theatre Air Force and the Air Force. After graduating from the OUC in 2023, Li Hong actively applied his knowledge and experience to serve his comrades, helping them solve legal issues and earning high recognition from all the personnel in his unit.
