Recently, the results of the selection of outstanding alumni of the Open University of China (OUC) were announced, recognising 328 alumni from various industries across the country.

These individuals, with accomplishments as their foundation and technology as their wings, demonstrate resilience, confidence, and a pragmatic, enterprising spirit, writing a unique chapter of progress of the OUC people. From today on, the stories of some alumni will be selected for sharing. By reviewing their outstanding deeds and listening to their life insights, the OUC’s achievements in talent development over the last 45 years are highlighted.

Wen Bangyan studied Mechanical Engineering at the Open University of China (OUC, formerly known as China Central Radio and Television University) from 1979 to 1982. The multifunctional electromagnetic valve he invented won the Excellent Patent Award in China and the Gold Medal at the Geneva International Invention Exhibition. The enterprise he founded was honoured as an "Excellent Unit of Private Scientific and Technological Enterprises in China" and a "Zhejiang Provincial-level Civilised Unit"; the school he established was named one of the "Top Ten Private Schools in China (Secondary Vocational Level)" and an "Outstanding Private School in Zhejiang Province". He has been invited three times to give academic reports at the World Congress of Mathematicians.

In 1988, he was awarded the title of "National - level Young and Middle - aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions"; in 1989, he was named "National Model Worker"; in 1993, he was titled "Outstanding Private Technological Entrepreneur in China", etc.

Wen Bangyan, a national model worker, a national-level expert with outstanding contributions, and the chairman of Zhejiang Yongjiu Technology Industry Co., Ltd., has been persevering on the arduous innovation journey for more than fifty years.

Blazing the Trail of Entrepreneurship Combining "Science, Industry and Education"

To realise his ideals, in 1981, Wen Bangyan resolutely resigned from his position as the technical director in a factory and founded Ruian Yongjiu Electromechanical Factory with self-raised funds. Through a new entrepreneurial path integrating scientific research, industrial production and education, Ruian Yongjiu Electromechanical Factory has become a leading enterprise in the national electromagnetic valve industry. During the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding of New China, Wen Bangyan, as a representative of national model workers, was honoured to be cordially received by then-President Jiang Zemin on the Tian'anmen Rostrum.

In 1984, Wen Bangyan founded the Yongjiu Electromechanical Research Institute and was dedicated to invention and creation.

He went to the Shanghai Institute of Science and Technology Information to consult patent archives of nearly 50 years from 25 countries. After years of painstaking research, he invented the "multifunctional electromagnetic valve". By adding just two small screws and one thin core rod to this device, six new functions can be added.

Subsequently, his inventions have been emerging in an endless stream. Since the implementation of the Patent Law in 1984, Wen Bangyan has obtained more than 20 patents, including three U.S. invention patents, most of which are in the field of automatic control valves.

In 1985, Wen Bangyan founded the private Ruian Yongjiu Electromechanical School. He promoted success-oriented education aiming at employment, innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as error-correction education by means of discovery, correction and prevention. The school formulated a teaching principle of "acquiring knowledge, learning skills, fostering innovation, cultivating sentiment and seeking fair development". Many graduates from Ruian Yongjiu Electromechanical School later became engineers and technicians and excellent backbones in enterprises. Quite a number of them also won provincial-and-municipal-level science and technology progress awards, teaching skills awards, and titles such as model workers and advanced workers.

The Academic Innovation Path of Exploring the Unknown

Since the 1990s, Wen Bangyan has mainly focused his energy on research and innovation in logic, mathematics and philosophy, and has frequently appeared at various academic conferences, winning praise from his peers with his unique insights and profound thoughts.

In October 2000, Wen Bangyan was invited to attend the National Policy Science Academic Conference, and his report "Knowledge Economy, Cultural Leap and Policy Suggestions" was published as a key article in the magazine Chinese Public Administration of the State Council.

In 2014, he published "On the Justice of Value Development", which adopts a new thinking method of three-dimensional five-element dialectics, revealing the profound connotations of value, the laws of value development and the core value system of contemporary society from the basic level of philosophy.

With his wisdom and courage, Wen Bangyan has written extraordinary chapters in his life. From arduous entrepreneurship to invention and innovation, from promoting talent through education to academic exploration, he has always adhered to his original intention and been unswervingly committed.
