On the 10th of November 2023, at the beginning of the autumn semester of Calligraphy, Pang Zhonghua, a distinguished professor of the Open University of China (OUC), a famous Chinese hard-pen calligrapher, educator and poet, and the Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Hard-Pen Calligraphy Association, gave a lecture to the teachers and students of the Calligraphy Department of the Liaoning Open University on the "First Lesson of the First Semester".

Nearly 70 people attended the lecture at the site, including Guo Min, vice president of Liaoning Open University, Yang Mei, director of the School of Public Education (Centre for Aesthetic Education), Tang Yingshan, Professor of the School of Art of the OUC, as well as representatives of teachers and students from all school units of the Liaoning Open University system and colleges of the provincial university. Zhao Guojun, assistant to the president of Liaoning Open University and director of the Academic Affairs Office, presided over the lecture.

Before the start of the lecture, Professor Tang Yingshan introduced the School of Art of the OUC and talked about Professor Pang Zhonghua, and his views on him. Guo Min pointed out that this lecture is an important initiative of Liaoning Open University to implement aesthetic education and promote the connotative development of aesthetic education, and he hoped that the participants would be able to better feel the beauty of calligraphy through learning. He awarded Professor Pang Zhonghua with a certificate of appointment for being hired as a visiting professor of the Liaoning Open University system on the spot.

Professor Pang Zhonghua introduced the story of five thousand years of Chinese calligraphy, talked about how calligraphy has been integrated into the lives of generations of the Chinese people, and introduced the basic strokes and key points of writing the Regular Script in terms of angle, strength, structure, rhythm and other aspects. Professor Pang demonstrated the interconnection of calligraphy and music by playing the accordion, and showed his original Happy Calligraphy teaching method and the vast amount of space within calligraphy creation, leading the audience to a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese culture. Professor Pang's passionate speech won endless applause from both the teachers and students.

Professor Tang Yingshan and Ren Tianchun from the School of Art of the OUC and representatives of teachers and students of Liaoning Open University, held a discussion on the construction of calligraphy discipline. Teachers and students of Calligraphy from Benxi, Tieling, Fuxin, Jinzhou, Chaoyang and other regions in Liaoning Province exchanged views on the curriculum setup, resource situation, discipline development and other issues.
