On 4th September 2023, Pang Zhonghua, a distinguished professor from the OUC School of Art and founder and chair of the China Hard-pen Calligraphy Association, delivered a compelling lecture titled “Writing Calligraphy with Happiness and Nourishing Your Soul.”
The event was sponsored by OUC and hosted by Henan Open University (OU). Notable attendees included Henan OU leadership members: Zhao Jihong, secretary of the Party Committee; Sun Bing, president; and Zhou Haixing, deputy secretary of the Party Committee. Approximately 100 teachers and students were present at the lecture venue, while 2,500 teachers and students from the broader school system tuned into the live stream.
Beginning the lecture with the song My Love for You – A Song Dedicated to the OUC， Professor Pang conveyed his deep affection for OUC. During his presentation, he drew from his personal experiences in calligraphy to touch upon the history of Chinese calligraphy, its relationship with music, and techniques for mastering hard-pen calligraphy, among other topics. Intermittently playing the accordion and weaving humor into his speech, Professor Pang imparted to the young audience his approach to "finding joy in calligraphy." Reflecting on his own academic journey, he also urged the students to continuously accumulate knowledge, practice diligently, and remain committed. The lecture was met with rapt attention from both teachers and students, who frequently burst into enthusiastic applause. Many in the audience also eagerly raised their hands to engage in interactive sessions, receiving both encouragement and thoughtful guidance from Professor Pang.
A representative from Henan OU shared that, out of deep love for his hometown and country, Professor Pang has dedicated decades to the promotion and transmission of traditional Chinese culture, almost as if time stood still. He has spread the art and culture of calligraphy both domestically and internationally, showcasing the commitment of a true cultural scholar. Seizing this opportunity, the University aims to deepen its teachers' and students' understanding of traditional Chinese culture and elevate the calligraphy and cultural literacy across the institution. Additionally, the University places a high emphasis on calligraphy education. By continually enhancing both degree and non-degree education, it strives to elevate the standard of calligraphy instruction and learning.
Participation in such activities is pivotal for cultivating individuals with a refined cultural understanding. Through aesthetic education, it enriches one's mind and strengthens the core competencies of students within the open education system.
