On 27 May, the Experimental School of the Open University of China (OUC) held a welcome ceremony titled “Forging Ahead on the New Journey and Building Dreams for the Future” for the 2023 spring semester whole network education programme.

Li Song, member of the Party Committee and vice president of the OUC, attended the event and delivered a speech. He pointed out that over the past 40 years, the OUC has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents, established a team of renowned teachers, gained widespread recognition from society, and made positive contributions to the construction of a learning society. He expressed three hopes to the students. The first is for them to cherish their time and study hard. Li said they should strike a balance between work and study, utilize their time flexibly, and engage in independent learning anytime and anywhere with the aid of information technology and mobile learning devices. The second hope Li raised is for the students to strive for progress and apply what they learn. He said they should use learning to enhance intelligence and cultivate personal character. While developing a theoretical framework, he said they should comprehensively learn and keep up with the times so as to develop into talents with both knowledge and abilities. The third is for them to hold lofty aspirations, and always pursue excellence.

Sun Hongfei, dean of the Experimental School, delivered a speech on the theme of "striving". He encouraged the students to realize their own value through hard work and struggle as she raised three hopes: to make plans and set ambitious goals, to persevere through hard work, and to practice lifelong learning and enhance their skills.

The event showcased renowned faculty from various disciplines through video presentations to the students. The class teacher representative also conveyed her best wishes to the students for the new online semester, assuring them of her unwavering support and companionship throughout their learning journey.

Cao Shanshan, director of the Science and Technology Teaching and Research Office, delivered a speech as the representative of the teachers. She expressed her hope that the students would actively seek and reflect upon their learning objectives, actively explore and cultivate their interests, and appreciate the diversity of learning experiences. She encouraged them to overcome difficulties and strive for personal growth in their future studies.

Wang Zhennan, an undergraduate student majoring in Chinese Language and Literature in the autumn semester of 2022, delivered a speech as the student representative. He extended his best wishes to the new students for the new semester, and encouraged them to read extensively and develop their skills and abilities.

Yin Shuchang, an undergraduate student majoring in Civil Engineering in the spring semester of 2023, spoke as the representative of the new students. He expressed his hope for the new semester and said that he would strive to master professional knowledge, enhance his comprehensive abilities, and embark on a successful journey in the face of social competition.

More than 3,000 new students participated in the welcome ceremony online and offline, creating a lively and joyful on-site atmosphere. Some department heads attended the event, engaging with the students and distributing school badges, prizes and other tokens of care, demonstrating their sincere concern for the new students. The event deepened the students' understanding of the Experimental School, enhanced their sense of belonging, and received a warm welcome from the students.
