On 21 April 2023, the Seniors University of China (SUC) held the first Reading Campus Culture and Art Festival on Weigongcun Campus in Beijing.
The work of zero-based oil painting students, instructed by Professor Tang Yingshan from the School of Art, were exhibited at the event. A new course titled “Oil Painting for Beginners, Starting from the Works of Van Gogh and Monet” was also launched. Liu Chen, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the Open University of China (OUC), attended the event along with more than 50 students and staff.

Professor Tang introduced the content of the new course along with the teaching team and schedule. In response to the question of whether students with zero foundations can learn oil painting, Professor Tang led the students through an exhibition of student work, discussing the role of colour, light and shadow in oil paintings, and how to copy the world famous paintings of Van Gogh and Monet. The students expressed great enthusiasm, with all 30 vacant seats filled.

The "Online Oil Painting Community" is suitable for beginners and was established by a teaching team led by Professor Tang from the OUC’s School of Art. Since 2019, a series of courses have been launched, gaining great popularity among learners and achieving remarkable results. The community has more than 39,000 registered students from all over the world and has been reported on by many media agencies.
The course was set up at Weigongcun Campus of the SUC, which continues to explore the integration of the large-scale online teaching model with attempts at holding small-scale offline training at the OUC School of Art. It will open on 15 May, and once it is launched offline it will be broadcast on the video account of SUC synchronously via live streaming. It is hoped this will provide more art lovers with a high-quality, professional arts education and teaching services.
