To implement the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) call to promote reading, guide staff to enjoy reading, read good books and be good at reading, the Open University of China (OUC) launched a book sharing activity hosted by the leader of the university on 18 April 2023, as part of the OUC Reading Month.

Li Song, member of the OUC Party Committee and vice president, attended the event.

Li said reading books is extremely important, and that the spiritual development of an individual is dependent on the length and depth of his reading experience. He said those who put more effort into reading books will gain greater wisdom and enlightenment. As an example, he discussed a book series on Mao Zedong, telling participants it brings us closer to understanding the greatness of the former Chinese leader, including his life philosophy and practice.

Eight teachers also shared a reading list with attendees. It covered a wide variety of categories and content, from red classics and famous literary works to books about scientific development and aesthetics. They demonstrated how reading books has influenced and shaped their lives.

Li encouraged everyone to read more books and let books enrich our lives and minds. He said a culture of reading books is an essential part of university life, and that nurturing people through culture is required to achieve the goal of fostering virtue through education. It is expected that the book sharing activity will help create a better reading environment.

A total of 45 people from several OUC departments attended the event.
