Li Huixian, a student at the Open University of Jilin’s School of Elderly Education, is passionate about music and lifelong learning. She is also committed to public service and spends her days teaching vocals to community residents online. Her goal? To use music to spread love and hope and become a role model to others.
Love and hope through the sound of music
Li has always loved singing. As a child she was blessed with a natural voice, and she became an essential member of art programmes during her time at school.
After retiring in July 2018, she immediately enrolled in singing and piano classes at the Jilin University for Older Adults. From that moment on, she has fully immersed herself in the world of music.
Li has taken full advantage of her time back at school, participating in multiple art organizations geared towards performance. She uses the sound of music to convey a sense of love and hope.
Inspiring others to love life through lifelong learning
Li soon discovered that singing is not as simple as it seems. Through her studies, she began to understand just how much effort goes into making a song that is both beautiful and produced to a professional standard. A simple sheet of music needs to have melody, rhythm, lyrics, emotions.
As long as she sings, she says she will adhere to the highest possible standards. To achieve this, she records her singing and listens to it in order to learn. As the saying goes, “Everything comes to those who wait,” and she won gold prize in the Fifth Singing Competition of “Good Voice of the Community,” held in Jilin Province.
Li has touched the people around her with her actions. Through the example she has set and her efforts as a volunteer, she inspires others with her personal philosophy, “It’s never too old to learn”.
