The Digital Experiential Centre of the Open University of China (OUC) has opened at its Weigongcun campus, aiming to integrate teaching, exploration of educational models, and information technology into a comfortable and convenient space that encourages participation.
Learning need have no boundaries, and in this centre technology allows knowledge to be both acquired and shared, with creativity, personal development, and mastery of skills promoted via brainstorming. The space allows a range of learning, from independent study to free discussion, injecting new vitality into the learning community and stimulating innovative thinking.
Breaking from the traditional library- and classroom-based style of instruction, what kinds of unique experiences does the new centre offer?
Escape the rush and the noise
It is said that reading makes us to look into ourselves and towards our futures. In our busy and fragmented era, universities offer peace in mind. The small ink-coloured QR code on a table allows one to reserve a seat electronically, then sign in, and sit down to enjoy reading, studying, or just thinking on one's own.
Communicate face-to-face
Technology enables "internet-plus" education, but face-to-face communication is also important for promoting collaboration, fostering innovative thinking, and improving social skills. This centre enables a group of students to study together and share ideas, while private rooms allows conversations with teachers to take place.
New ways of learning and thinking
The centre also includes modular tables and chairs that can be freely rearranged. Students attend class sitting around the teacher; use interactive screens for efficient collaborative learning; quickly form groups and have inspiring discussions via smart screens. Such a classroom keeps students active and engaged, as well as able to participate remotely, with live broadcasts and recording enabled.
Keeping learning vital
The centre gives students great choices of where and how to study, based on the heights and physical positions they find most conducive to concentration. Natural and indoor lighting complement each other, and offer relaxation, while its bright and lively colours make the space vibrant and pleasant.
The centre is designed to help students of different ages and personalities realise their potential through diverse practices, to break through restrictions, and to promote communication and thinking. In promoting the healthy and sustainable development of "internet-plus" education, the Open University of China (OUC) will continue to explore and innovate in terms of teaching methods, and provide high-quality spaces and resources to all students.
