Li Wanjun’s Background:
Li Wanjun graduated in 2012 with a specialty in Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation (Information Technology Direction)from the junior college at Changchun Radio & Television University(Changchun RTVU).
He currently works for Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd.(CRVC),where he has successfully welded bogie frames for high-speed Electric Multiple Units(EMUs), railway coaches, Metro trains, and special vehicles. He has developed more than 20 different welding specifications and techniques for truck frames, and created more than 100 technical innovations, among which, 21 have obtained national patents. The Welder Technicians Studio, established through his efforts, was honoured as the “Li Wanjun Master Skills Studio” by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. He has won numerous honours and awards, such as Changchun Special-class Model Worker, Senior Specialist of Jilin Province, Special Allowance of the State Council, National May 1st Labor Medal, National Technical Expert, the Chinese Skills Award, and so on. In 2012, he was elected delegate to the 18th National CPC Congress. He was named the 2015 national “Common People Learning Stars with the Most Touching Deeds.”
Li Wanjun holds each of his welds to the standards of a piece of art
Li Wanjun, Master Welder of High-Speed Railway Trains
People are fond of Li Wanjun, not only because of his wonderful skills and dedication to the country, but also because of his simplicity, like plain jade.
In the world of welding, wherever Li Wanjun goes, he is surrounded and accompanied by his numerous “Jun fans.” When you search for Li Wanjun on Baidu, you will come across his many patents and wonderful stories. In the welding world, this front-line technical worker from CRVC of China CNR Corporation Limited (now incorporated into CRRC Corporation Limited)is a huge star.
During the 28 years between graduating from an unknown vocational school to becoming a “Master of Welding High-speed Rail Trains,” as honoured by the Premier of China, Jun has won the Chinese Skills Award and been elected as delegate to the 18th National Congress of the CPC. Li Wanjun uses his welding torch to paint a bright path to glory. However, he still keeps to his true self from beginning to end, rooted in the front-line, working in a down to earth manner, and conducting himself with a sincere and magnanimous mind.
“I come here only for first!”
In 1997, masters gathered at a welding contest in Changchun city.
The 29-year old Li Wanjun, taking part in the competition for the first time, represented CRVC. As the youngest competitor, he was underrated by older mechanics.
Three practical tests made up the contest: Tube Socket Welding, Sheet Welding, and Overhead Welding. After the whistle blow opening the competition, Li Wanjun put his first efforts into the most energy-exhausting overhead welding. When the municipal leaders overseeing the field trial viewed his work, they could not help but stop and repeatedly offer praise: “Good welding!”
Unexpectedly, Li Wanjun stood up and replied in a loud voice: “Welding well is not an end. I come here for first place!” Staring at this “arrogant” young fellow, the leader smiled: “That’s really big talk. Do you know that the first and second prize winners in each of the prior contests are here?”
Li Wanjun’s face flushed. He lowered his head and welded hard. When the competition was over and all the weldings of the competitors were put on display, people observed and commented. Li Wanjun pushed to the front and noticed that all three welds that had won the highest appraisal came from his hands.
A month later, the results of the competition were released. Li Wanjun, with the same outstanding outcome as in the test trial, had undoubtedly won the championship. By this time, he had been working for ten years.
Since then, Li Wanjun has often exchanged experiences with welding masters from different companies, which has helped him make great progress in his own welding. He easily obtained six international welder (technician) qualifications, including carbon steel welding and austenite welding, and became a versatile super-welder with great talents.
You need to see Li Wanjun’s unique talents with your own eyes to believe them. His hands are capable of quickly and flawlessly welding two stainless steel wires with a diameter of only 3.2mm. Without grinding, consistency can be ensured between the two welded parts, without any indication of welding.
Li Wanjun’s three–step welding of hanging wires to lift a 25kg bucket was hailed as a stunt show, that made all the observers shout,“A thousand piculs suspended by a single hair! Startling every step of the way! Created by CRVC worker.”In the first pass, a thin, 2mm diameter wire was spot welded on the iron frame beam so that it could bear 25 kg water. The second step is to change the 2mm diameter wire to a 1.2mm wire through spot welding so that it can still bear 25 kg water. The third and final step is to weld the two 1.2mm-diameter thin wires together and weld them to the beam to lift up the 25kg bucket.
“At a distance of about 20 meters away, just by hearing the sound of welding, Li Wanjun can determine the current and voltage, the width of the welding line, whether it’s downward welding or vertical welding, and the welding quality, with no errors!” All of his workers are deeply impressed by this.
Li Wanjun loved painting and sculpture in his childhood. After he became accomplished in the craft of welding, he used a welding torch as pen and welding arc as knife, painting and carving on steel, managing to turn every stroke of every piece into a work of beautiful art, which is why his welding is considered a work of art.
His superb welding techniques and excellent internal drive gave Li Wanjunan overwhelming power. In the ten years between 1997 and 2007, he had taken part in a welding contest in Changchun as a representative for CRVC. He created a new record in the region, winning first prize three times successively.
