On 1 November 2024, the Open University of China (OUC) held a teaching and research activity for the Chinese-related majors in Quanzhou, actively responding to the OUC's call to develop a "dual-competence" teaching faculty.

The aim is to promote high-quality development of open education through integrated collaboration. This event focused on AI-empowered teaching and research, further deepened the immersive team live streaming teaching reform, and marked the official entry of the core teaching team of the Chinese-related majors into a new stage of digital and intelligent teaching and research.

Distinguished scholar in the field of education, Professor Jiao Jianli from South China Normal University, conducted a workshop on the theme "Efficient Lesson Preparation with Generative AI", providing practical AI-assisted lesson preparation guidance for the teachers. Liu Shuhui, a high-level talent in Quanzhou and a teacher at Huaqiao University, shared insights on " Application of AI Large Models in Scientific Research Innovation", demonstrating how AI can enhance research efficiency. Xiong Wei, deputy general manager of the OUC Online, introduced how the OUC Intelligent Foundation provides smart teaching solutions for teachers of humanities . Zhang Shiwei and Xiao Wanying, faculty members from the School of Humanities at the OUC, shared their insights on the course design of Creative Writing and the application of AI in teaching the Modern Chinese course, respectively.

Expert Lectures

In terms of deepening teaching reform, Bai Baoyan, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and president of Harbin Open University, led a team of teaching and technical staff to interact with Han Yi, dean of the School of Humanities at the OUC, and Bai Chenyang, vice dean, on the immersive team live streaming teaching reform on Xiao Hong special subject. The session included a Q&A with the participating teachers and was moderated by Professor Liang Ertao, deputy leader of the Teaching Central Group from Henan Open University.

Sharing Experiences from the Immersive Live Streaming Teaching Team on Xiao Hong Special Subject

Drawing on the experience of the Xiao Hong special subject thematic reform and the scenes and content observed at the real teaching sites, the central group teachers used newly learned AI empowerment methods to quickly design an immersive team live streaming teaching plan on the theme of Ming Dynasty literary figure and thinker Li Zhi, divided into four groups and completed within 20 minutes, followed by lesson demonstrations. The workshop discussions were lively, and the effects of AI empowerment were impressive, enhancing both the overall professional teaching capabilities and the application skills of digital intelligence in teaching among the central group teachers. Han Yi emphasised that while a comprehensive use of various AI tools as clues can open up new ideas, it is ultimately necessary to conduct scientific validation and ensure rigorous and accurate academic expression to achieve scientific and effective AI empowerment through human-machine collaboration.

Participants praised the content-rich and forward-looking design of the research activity, expressing their intention to quickly apply the new concepts, tools, and methods they learned during the event to their actual teaching work. Over 30 professors and associate professors from 25 open universities nationwide attended this teaching and research activity.
