The Open University of China recently hosted the second lecture in the "2024 Special Training Series for the Integration of Ideological and Political Education into Curriculum," which also forms part of the ongoing " Lectures by Famous Teachers from 100 Universities " initiative.
The event featured a presentation by Professor Yu Jingjun, a doctoral supervisor from the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation at Beihang University, titled "Curriculum Development and Practice in the Context of Emerging Engineering Disciplines." The session was chaired by Sun Zhijuan, vice dean of the OUC's School of Science and Engineering.
Professor Yu provided an in-depth analysis of the essence, development strategies, and the Beihang model of emerging engineering disciplines. Focusing on the "Mechanical Principles" course, he discussed curriculum reforms and practical applications within the new engineering framework. He highlighted Beihang University's approach, which integrates classical and cutting-edge knowledge, theory with practice, and science with engineering, to foster students' patriotic sentiments, scientific spirits, and philosophical thinking. Additionally, Professor Yu shared his pedagogical strategies based on the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) approach, emphasising the integration of scientific research and teaching, and the mutual reinforcement of theory and practice to ignite students' learning enthusiasm.
The event attracted a gathering of professional educators from the School of Science and Engineering and the Learning Resources Department, who listened intently and engaged in lively discussions. Teachers from open universities across the country also participated via an online platform.
Participants unanimously agreed that the training not only deepened their understanding of integrating ideological and political education into the curriculum but also provided them with valuable teaching experiences and methods. In the future, the university plans to continue these special training sessions in areas such as "emerging agricultural sciences" and "emerging liberal arts" in accordance with its comprehensive strategy.
The event was co-organised by the Academic Affairs Department, the School of Science and Engineering, and the Department of Student Affairs and Teacher Development.
