Recently, the Faculty of Education at the Open University of China (OUC) hosted the 2023 OUC Seminar on Public-service Management (Family and Community Education Guidance) and Sports Operations and Management Teaching Work in Tianjin.
This seminar was organised in the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress, with a focus on implementing the core task of fostering virtue through education. It aimed to promote the reform of talent training and teaching in education and sports disciplines, enhancing the integration of political ideology and modern information technology in education and teaching.
The seminar specifically concentrated on specialized teaching reforms, the construction of courses integrating political ideology, thesis guidance work, network teaching experiences, and other related topics. It provided a platform for discussion and exchange on these critical issues.
In attendance were 67 heads of relevant majors, course coordinators, tutors, and members of course construction teams from the Faculty of Education, along with representatives from 29 branches and schools. This gathering underscored the commitment to advancing educational excellence and innovatively blending political ideology with modern teaching methodologies.

Liu Zhigang delivered a speech
At the seminar, Liu Zhigang, a member of the Party committee and vice president of Tianjin Open University, gave an insightful speech. He emphasised the importance of establishing our nation as a leader in education and talent. To achieve this, he underlined the necessity of providing education that meets the people's expectations. Specifically, he pointed out that majors in education and sports should focus on supporting the development of our nation as an educational leader. This involves accelerating the development of a high-quality open education system, advancing reforms in talent development, building learning resources, implementing teaching processes, and reforming education evaluation. Liu Zhigang's speech highlighted the critical need for excellence and quality in the educational and teaching efforts of education and sports majors.
Lin Xiuqin delivered a speech
Lin Xiuchin, deputy director of the Academic Affairs Department at the OUC, focused her presentation on the high-quality development of education and the building of a strong educational sector. She addressed the current challenges and potential solutions in the development of disciplines and majors at the OUC, clearly outlining the future direction for the advancement of education and sports majors at the institution.
Zhang Xia delivered a speech
Zhang Xia, director of the Faculty of Education of the OUC, introduced the majors of the School of Education Management and the relevant work of the department recently, and deployed the follow-up work for the construction and reform of education and sports majors.
The experts delivered themed reports
Professor Li Xiangru from the Capital University of Physical Education and Sports discussed the status and mission of sports in the new era, the differences and connections between social sports and leisure sports, and the trends and prospects of the sports industry development. Professor Li Qing from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications introduced the basic knowledge of generative artificial intelligence, how generative AI can assist teachers, the risks it brings to teaching and how to respond to them, and how to address the impact of generative AI in teaching evaluations. Researcher Wu Hongjian from Beijing Normal University spoke about the multiple challenges parents face in the process of child-rearing and provided guidance on family education under a positive psychological value orientation.
Dr. Chen Fengying gave special training on thesis guidance
Dr. Chen Fengying, secretary-general of the Education Subcommittee of the Degree Evaluation Committee of the OUC and the Faculty of Education, provided specialized training on the requirements, academic norms, and common issues in dissertation writing within the field of education. This training was enhanced by incorporating examples from outstanding dissertations.

Representatives of excellent teaching team shared and exchanged ideas
Teachers from the Hebei, Chengdu, and Xi'an Branches, who were recognised for their outstanding 2022 teaching plans in courses integrating political ideology, shared their experiences in this area. Similarly, representatives from the teaching teams of the Chongqing, Chengdu, and Inner Mongolia Branches, who had achieved excellent assessments in both 2021 and 2022, discussed their approaches to team building, collaborative teaching, and research.
Group discussion session
During the group discussion session, Ma Tengfei, the deputy head of the School of Education Management, outlined the current operations and future development plans of the physical education program. Xia Jie, a faculty member from the same school, discussed the enrollment process and ongoing reforms in various majors, including Public-service Management (with specializations in Family and Community Education Guidance), Public-service Management (School Management), and Public Affairs Management (School and Community Education Management). Additionally, Liu Jinglu, another teacher from the School of Education Management, shared insights on the preliminary plans for Educational Technology (with a focus on Online Education), as well as visions for future school operations.
The teachers participating in the seminar engaged in a vibrant discussion on several key topics. These included the reform of the talent training program, the formation of a teaching team, the implementation of teaching processes, the construction of learning resources, and reforms in examination and evaluation methods.
The seminar brought together experts, scholars, and teachers from the OUC, fostering a consensus on the innovative development of education and physical education programs. It enhanced communication among educators within these fields, facilitating the sharing of practical experiences in curriculum construction that integrates political ideology and in the operation of teaching teams. Additionally, the seminar showcased teaching achievements, laying a solid foundation for advancing the digital construction and high-quality development of the OUC's education and physical education majors.
