On 31 October 2022, the Open University of China (OUC) invited Professor Liang Wannian, head of the Expert Group of the Epidemic Response and Disposal Leading Group of the National Health Commission (NHC), and dean of the Institute for Healthy China, Tsinghua University, to teach in the “Healthy China: Lectures by Famous Teachers” programme.
Professor Liu Chen, deputy secretary of the OUC Party Committee and president of the University for Older Adults, discussed in-depth the preparation of the national university for older adults with Professor Liang, who expressed his concerns about the construction and future development of the university. They discussed the development of Healthy China courses and other tasks as well.
Professor Liang’s lecture is a major part of the “Healthy China: Lectures by Famous Teachers” programme. He began by speaking of the “three focuses” of the hierarchical medical system and the “five measures” to spread public-health knowledge, and adhered closely to the topic, “China’s Public Health From SARS to Covid-19”, covering prevention and control of infectious diseases as well as the hot topics of inadequate and overly expensive medical services.
The programme was jointly developed by the OUC and the Chinese Centre for Health Education to implement the “Healthy China” strategy and respond to population aging. The health-care needs of the elderly are highlighted in the programme’s offerings, which cover the prevention and control of infectious diseases, nutrition and health, dental care, fall prevention, sudden death, and infection. The lectures are given by renowned experts and scholars, domestic and foreign, including several committee chairs. It is an example of high-quality learning resources being provided to older adults.
