Ten OUC urban-services volunteers recently received a special gift – a certificate from the Volunteer Department of the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and a commemorative certificate autographed by Cai Qi, committee president. Liang Chunhui, a young CPC member with the Academic Affairs Department of the Open University of China (OUC) was named an “Outstanding Urban-services Volunteer” for the games.

Liang Chunhui graduated from the Beijing Institute of Technology in 2013 and worked three years as a college village official in the Majuqiao township of Beijing’s Tongzhou district. His grassroots experience planted in him a strong desire to serve, and in 2021, as a member of the Lyuyuan Volunteer Team, he became a formal Beijing volunteer.

During the 2022 Winter Olympics, Liang joined the volunteers providing services within the city and for the games. His site was near the J exit of the Jinanqiao subway station near Shougangyuan, where he distributed brochures to residents and tourists, and explained the futuristic technology of the Games, such as its IT-based high-speed rail, and the ice-making with direct-cooling technology using carbon dioxide. He also provided Q & A games on the Olympics for children.

During the Spring Festival, Liang volunteered for the “2022 Badachu Park Ice & Snow Week”, providing guidance to tourists and ensuring that passengers crossed the streets safely. He earned praise from both the tourists and park staff.

Liang says he feels honoured to be recognised, and that his service through the Academic Affairs Department is similar. “The department is meant to serve all OUC students and teachers.” He is very aware that its reputation depends on his actions, and considers it the responsibility of every member of the department to provide the best possible service. The Academic Affairs Department operates in a spirit of “dedication, friendship, mutual help and progress”, and contributes to the overall progress of the university.
