On the morning of 3 July 2020, the International Department of the Open University of China (OUC) held a video conference on International Chinese Language Education major enrolment.

The OUC kicked off enrolment for the International Chinese Language Education major in the 2020 spring semester. The purpose of the conference was to summarise and discuss the operation, organisation, and implementation of the major under the top level coordination of the OUC headquarters over the past six months. The conference also aimed to mobilise the power of the OUC system to further promote the enrolment and teaching of the major, focus on its development, and gather strength to promote the internationalisation of the OUC.

Lin Yu, vice president of the OUC; Liu Zhanrong, director of the International Department; Chen Kun, deputy director of the Academic Affairs Department; Liu Jianguo, president of the OUC Harbin Branch; and Wu Qing’er, director of admissions at the OUC Guangzhou Branch, attended the video meeting . More than 150 people, including leaders and personnel from teaching and management departments and teachers from the OUC headquarters, 38 branches, two schools directly affiliated to the OUC, and one corporate and industry college, attended the meeting online. Wang Shuo, deputy director of the International Department, presided over the meeting.

Lin Yu pointed out that enrolment work for the International Chinese Language Education major must adhere to six principles. First, we must comply with and abide by all laws and regulations when carrying out enrolment work. Second, we must adhere to the national strategy of serving the country and devote ourselves to the popularisation of language while helping to spread technology and cultivating foreign students who understand and are friendly to China. Third, we must adhere to providing practical and applicable teaching in formats that are popular with students so as to attract them to choose this major. Fourth, we must create chains of actions across the entire OUC system, give full play to the advantages and enthusiasm of the branches, and jointly promote foreign exchange and cooperation. Fifth, we must adhere to the integration of production and education, support implementation work, and explore exchange and cooperation with overseas Chinese communities in combination with the strategy of bringing enterprises abroad. Sixth, we must adhere to the principle of orderly development, adjust measures to suit local conditions, and promote work according to specific conditions.

Wang Li, an International Chinese Language Education course leader, gave an introduction to the major. Wu Qing’er and Chen Yilan, heads of the major, shared the Guangzhou Branch’s practical experiences of enrolment and teaching work in spring 2020. Liu Jianguo shared his practical experience of pioneering the “Vocational Education Going Global” initiative. During the conference, a short publicity video on International Chinese Language Education, which was created by the major's teaching team, was debuted.
