The Planning and Management Office of the National Publication Foundation (NPF) recently announced the results of the performance evaluation of projects it funded in 2019.

Stronger Manufacturing, Stronger China: From Manufacturing Power Strategy to China Manufacturing 2025 and Eye of Space: Space Technology Escorts the Belt and Road Initiative, two projects of the Audiovisual Publishing Press of the Open University of China (OUC) Press and Media Group, stood out among the 168 other projects in terms of their performance appraisal results. The projects were rated "excellent" and received commendations. Of the two projects, Stronger Manufacturing, Stronger China: From Manufacturing Power Strategy to China Manufacturing 2025 was graded as an "Exceptionally Excellent Project,” ranking second out of 30 projects due to its outstanding performance in terms of publishing quality, project management, and benefits to society.

Stronger Manufacturing, Stronger China: From Manufacturing Power Strategy to China Manufacturing 2025 is a public video lecture jointly planned and launched by the OUC and the strategic consultation centre of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). The Learning Resources Department of the OUC was responsible for the general coordination of the project, while the lectures were recorded and published by the OUC Audiovisual Publishing House. The project, covering five key programmes and ten key areas of China Manufacturing 2025, offers detailed explanations of advanced technologies and concepts such as intelligent manufacturing, high-end equipment, green manufacturing, and service-oriented manufacturing, with the aim of helping the public to fully understand the importance of the manufacturing industry for national economic development, as well as the goals of and methodology for China's transformation from a big manufacturing country to a strong one.

The project, which relies on the CAE’s top-level design, aims to comprehensively, accurately, and vividly present the achievements of strategic and scientific research into Chinese manufacturing by academicians and experts, and achieve the widespread dissemination and effective popularisation of this information to the public. Zhu Gaofeng, leader of the Manufacturing Power Strategy Research team and a CAE academician from the project team, serves as the chief editor. An expert group consisting of Gan Yong, deputy leader of the Manufacturing Power Strategy Research team, and a number of academicians and experts, including Liu Baicheng, Li Bohu, Qu Xianming, act as lecturers for the course, which not only gives explanations on macro aspects of strategy and the micro perspective of technology but also takes into account hot issues that concern the public concern. In terms of teaching design, based on the OUC’s rich experience of distance education course construction, the project fully considers the needs of learners and designs the teaching content, methodology, and processes according to the features of the course content and lecturers. In terms of the form of presentation of the lectures, the project gives full play to the professional video production advantages of the Audio and Video Publishing House of the OUC and adopts a variety of video performance forms interspersed with a large number of audio materials and exquisitely created charts, and supported with subtitles and well-designed visual packaging. The image of typical traditional TV lectures has been totally transfigured and the lectures given by the academicians and experts was vividly visualised. The lectures, with their combination of macro-level considerations and detailed content, not only preserves the elegant demeanour of the academicians and experts and their original lectures, but also gives full play to the advantages of video visualisation, which will help the audience absorb the information.

The project has been recognised by the Planning and Management Office of the NPF for its innovative topic selection, its scientific and inheritance value, and the extensive societal benefits created by its content. The OUC Press will continue to focus on NPF projects, adhere to the principle of "gathering famous teachers and publishing original and excellent works,” and constantly make improvements in order to create high quality publications.
