The Open University of China (OUC) recently held a meeting, the first of its kind, for its first Majors Committee. Lin Yu, chairman of the first Majors Committee and vice president of the OUC, presided over the meeting, which was also attended by 17 vice chairmen of the committee either in person or via video.
Lin Yu pointed out that the establishment of the Majors Committee is an important part of further standardising the establishment and management of OUC majors, improving the quality and level of majors, improving the dynamic adjustment and optimisation of majors, and strengthening the guidance and management of the discipline and major construction and personnel training work in accordance with the requirements of the OUC Major Setup and Management Measures of the OUC. The Majors Committee is an expert organisation established by the university and an integral part of the standardisation of the management of majors. It undertakes important responsibilities in the areas of setting and adjusting majors, enrolment, and determining the type and level or majors. The Majors Committee should give full play to the role of argumentation and deliberation, decision-making, and evaluation and supervision, in order to provide support for the reform and development of the university. He stressed that the majors that are retained should seize the opportunities presented by the “transition period,” further strengthen the construction of majors, actively expand sources of new students, and strive to achieve “double harvests” in social and economic benefits.
The meeting read out the Notice on the Establishment of the OUC Majors Committee (No. 4, OUC Education, 2020) and reviewed the Constitution of the OUC Majors Committee and the application for setting up new majors in 2020 and the adjustment of the structure of majors constructed under the leadership of the OUC headquarters. It decided to keep eight majors (directions) constructed with the leadership of the headquarters that have good social benefits and promising development prospects.
