From 21-22 November 2019, the OUC Faculty of Humanities held a seminar on teaching reform in the Chinese Language Literature and Secretary majors, as well as a promotion meeting for key discipline construction in Chengdu.

The purpose of the conference was to thoroughly implement the spirit of the National Education Work Conference; implement the OUC's strategic considerations in terms of deepening reform, creating excellence, and improving quality; adhere to the fundamental task of cultivating talented personnel through virtue; improve the quality of personnel training; give full play to the advantages of both the system and modern information technology; integrate system resources and work together to comprehensively implement the teaching process; and improve the discipline construction quality of the Chinese Language Literature and Secretary majors. A total of 59 people from the OUC headquarters and 31 branches attended the conference, including the heads of teaching departments and teachers engaged in the two majors.

Vice president of the Chengdu branch Su Wensheng gave a welcome speech and conducted an in-depth discussion on how open education can promote quality construction during the course of teaching reform. He pointed out that the construction of courses, majors, and the teaching team is an important pathway to excellence and quality improvement. The university should leverage the development of modern information technology to improve teaching methods, innovate education development paths, and promote development. Director of the Learner Support Service Centre Huang Dafang introduced the Chengdu branch's online support work and analysed the specific methods used by the Chengdu branch to promote teaching excellence and quality improvement through learner support.

Director of the OUC Faculty of Humanities Tang Yingshan delivered a speech entitled The Exploration and Practice of an Online Teaching Team. Bringing together the research and practice of the National Arts Fund Project "Moodle Platform Construction for the Appreciation and Creation of Traditional Chinese Landscape Paintings" that he presided over, he mentioned that the efficient operation of the online teaching team supports effective learning behaviour.

Relevant teacher representatives from the School of Arts exchanged views on topics including promoting Chinese Language and Literature as a key major; the setup of the Chinese Language and Literature major (undergraduate course for high school graduates); summarising the work and prospects of the online teaching team of the School of Arts; the teaching reform of the comprehensive practice of the Chinese Language and Literature major; and the challenges facing the secretary major and measures to address said challenges.

Professor Liang Ertao, director of the Teaching Affairs Department and director of the School of Humanities and Public Management of the Henan Branch; associate Professor Zhang Qiuchan, dean of the Chinese Language Department of the Anhui Branch; associate Professor Huang Yanxia, head of the undergraduate programme of the Hubei Branch; and Professor Zhou Wei from the Sichuan Branch gave work reports and shared their experience in terms of teaching organisation and implementation, guidance for graduation theses and degree applications, the setup and operation of the online teaching implementation team, and the classic recitation contest as a part of comprehensive professional practice, respectively.

The participants held group discussions and exchanges on the construction of the Chinese Language and Literature major (undergraduate course for high school graduates), the construction and operation of the curriculum teaching team, the status and trends of the Secretary major, and the reform of the comprehensive practice of the Chinese Language and Literature major.

At the closing ceremony of the conference, Tang Yingshan said that the Chinese Language and Literature major and the Secretary major are key majors for the OUC and the Faculty of Humanities and he hopes that all the teachers in the OUC system involved in these two majors should work together to keep pace with the times, seek a suitable bridge between degree and non-degree education, strive to improve professional quality and teaching quality in the context of continuous school development, and create a new era and new situation for the development of the two majors.
