On 8 October 2019, Guangdong Province held its 45th WorldSkills Competition Summary Commendation Meeting and Preparation Session for the Launch of the 46th WorldSkills Competition in Guangzhou. At the meeting, the winners, the team of expert coaches, and collectives and individuals from Guangdong Province who made outstanding contributions to the 45th WorldSkills Competition were commended. The meeting also announced the official launch of Guangdong Province's preparation for the 46th WorldSkills Competition.
The WorldSkills Competition is the world’s highest level professional skill competition and is also known as the "World Skills Olympics". At the 45th WorldSkills Competition, the Chinese delegation won 16 gold medals, 14 silver medals, five bronze medals, and 17 prizes for excellence. Once again, China took home the largest number of gold medals and overall number of medals, and the highest group total score. The students of the OUC (Guangzhou) and Guangzhou RTVU have once again won a victory. Among them, Hu Gengjun (School of Mechatronics, Guangzhou Branch) and Zheng Qiyuan (Yunnan Technician College) worked together and won a gold medal in the mobile robotics category at the 45th WorldSkills Competition, defeating five-time champions Korea and making a breakthrough for China. Wen Junkai from the Zhuhai Campus of Guangzhou RTVU won a prize for excellence in the prototype modelling category.

In recent years, students from the OUC (Guangzhou branch) have achieved great success at the WorldSkills competition and won many awards. Huang Fengjie from the Zhuhai Campus of Guangzhou RTVU won a gold medal in the Prototype Modelling category at the 44th WorldSkills Competition. Chen Qijia from the Zhuhai Campus of Guangzhou RTVU won a silver medal in the Mechanical Engineering CAD category at the 44th WorldSkills Competition. Zhang Jian from the Zhuhai Campus of Guangzhou RTVU won first prize in the Electrical Installations category at the Guangzhou Selection Competition of the 45th World Skills Competition and the Guangzhou, HK, Macao, and Chengdu Youth Skills Competition Selection.

Hu Gengjun studied for an open education junior college degree in Electrical Automation Technology at the School of the Mechatronics of the Guangzhou Branch. He always had a strong interest in machinery during his studies and also gave himself a solid foundation of knowledge and skills. He said that he, like other students who have achieved good results in the WorldSkills Competition, regarded the OUC (Guangzhou Branch) as an ideal choice to improve his academic level and abilities. He and other students have achieved outstanding results through their unremitting efforts and are writing their own chapter through their achievements.
