The 2016 scholarship evaluation of the Open University of China(OUC) concluded a few days ago, with a total of 7,969 students being awarded with scholarships.
Among them, 7,056 students were awarded OUC scholarships, 493 students won OUC “Field of Hope” scholarships, 101 students earned OUC Sunshine Scholarships for Disabled Education, and the remaining 319 students were awarded an OUC Scholarship for Non-Commissioned Officers.
The 2016 OUC scholarship evaluation was officially launched in January 2017. Each branch participating in the evaluation attached great importance to the work by carefully organising scholarship applications, preliminary reviews at tutoring centres, and reviews by OUC branches. On September 21st, 2017, the OUC convened an expert review meeting, and conducted a final review of candidates’ materials based on just, fair, and open principles. In November, the OUC appropriated scholarship funds to all branches and schools, and mailed the certificates for winners.
The 7,969 awardees come from 41 OUC branches and the OUC Experimental School, the School of Tibet, Ba Yi School, the School for the Air Force, and the School for the Disabled. They all hold a positive outlook, are hard-working, and have shown solid scholarly performances. Among them, there are excellent Communist Party members, as well as women role models who applied what they have learned, obtained outstanding results at their work, and won awards at national, ministerial, and provincial levels. There were “Influential Grain Growers” and “Countryside Stars,” rooted in rural areas, with their unselfish ambition to lead rural people to richer lives. There were advanced role models who were broken physically, but firm in spirit, who unceasingly strove to use knowledge to change their fate. There were sergeant representatives, assigned to barracks, but insistent on improving their own qualities, and accomplishing tasks to enhance preparedness for war, keeping duties, and safeguarding training in a remarkable way. All of them, who used their diligence, perseverance, and devotion, and forged their own glorious life, are role models for every OUC student.
The scholarship evaluation greatly inspired students, and stimulated school spirit and morale across the OUC. It demonstrated the role of outstanding model students, improved talent training quality across the OUC, encouraged students to strive to become stronger, behave positively, and study hard. The evaluation also strengthened the sense of belonging among OUC students, as well as enhanced the OUC’s brand image and social influence.
