Education and teaching reform is a current focus of society. Teachers are a critical factor in teaching reform. We must study learners, optimise teaching and learning environments, adjust teaching goals, reform teaching content and improve curriculum systems, develop high quality online courses, build a networked teaching team, provide a flexible and convenient learning style, exercise professional spirit, knowledge, and ability to enhance the conscientiousness of curriculum reform, and improve course construction, as well as operation and innovation ability.
On 8th September , 2017, the OUC held the 2017 Teachers' Day & Commendation Conference. The Beijing 2017 excellent teacher award winner and deputy director of OUC Faculty of Science and Engineering, Yuan Wei, delivered a speech at the conference. She said we should think deeply on OUC teaching reform. On behalf of all teachers, she pledged to contribute to teaching reform. OUC leaders Li Ling, Li Linshu, Liu Chen, Yang Xiaotang, Liu Xianghong, Qi Yanwei, and numerous teaching staff attended the conference. Teaching staff who have worked at the OUC for more than 30 years, as well as groups and individuals who won honours in teaching research and management for the 2016-2017 school year, were commended at the conference.
Li Ling delivers a speech
OUC vice president Li Ling delivered a speech. He stressed that, in the face of the challenging task of building a learning-oriented society and meeting the requirements of education reform, being a qualified OUC tutor is not easy. They are not only teaching guides for students, but also managers of the school organisational system, developers of learning resources, and researchers in open and distance education. Li Ling pointed out that the OUC is at a critical stage in its transformation. Through its goal of improving teaching quality, the OUC has identified eight key tasks, with teaching reform at the core. All faculty should be open-minded, transform ideas, and create a working environment, with improving teaching quality as their focus. Every department should be clear regarding the division of labour, cooperation, and promotion of all aspects of teaching reform. Li Ling stressed General Secretary Xi Jinping’s instructions in May this year that highlighted deeds by Professor Huang Danian of Jilin University. We must adhere to requirements put forward by General Secretary Xi Jinping, and follow comrade Huang Danian’s fine example. We shall move forward with confidence, study and work hard, and strive to explore the new areas reform and development within the OUC.

Commending teaching staff with more than 30 years of OUC service
OUC vice president Li Linshu announced the Commendations for Teaching Staff with More Than 30 Years’ Service at the OUC. He hoped commendation recipients would never forget their original inspiration, continue to work hard, adhere to a unified and pioneering spirit, make contributions to deepening comprehensive reform of the OUC, including teaching reform, based on the 13th "Five-Year" plan. All teaching staff should learn from them, work hard at their own posit, courageously innovate, and strive hard to make greater contributions to the cause of the OUC. Xu Xiangdan, from the Faculty of Economics & Management, and Xie Laiyi, from the Open University for Older Adults, delivered speeches on behalf of teaching staff who have worked at the OUC for more than 30 years.

At the conference, Professor Liu Jingduo of the OUC’s Education Research Institute delivered a speech entitled How to Enjoy your Career Life? How to Optimise Your Lifestyle? Based on research and experiments with large sample sizes, both at home and abroad, for more than 30 years, Professor Liu Jingduo utilised brain science to inspire people to maximise their life’s potential, extend their lifetime, and discover new mysteries of life.
