Sun Jiangtao started working as a specialised Social Work instructor in the Faculty of Political Science and Law at the Open University of China in July 2011. He was named an associate professor in 2019.

For his teaching he has been named an “MOE Famous Teacher of Ideological and Political Education” and given awards including “MOE Exemplary Project in Ideological and Political Education”, “OUC Quality Online Course”, second prize in the OUC Teaching-skills Competition, and third prize in the ninth “OUC Outstanding Research Outcomes”.

In addition to teaching, Sun volunteers in grassroots-level communities and trains other volunteers. Over ten thousand have received his training, enhancing their skills while expanding the scope of social work in the capital. He has been named an “OUC Role Model of Teacher Ethics” and "Excellent Social Worker in the Capital", and has placed in the “Top 100” of Chinese social workers. In 2022 he took part in urban volunteering for the Winter Olympic Games, a model of the dedication and responsibility of young OUC faculty.

Sun Jiangtao believes in “helping people help themselves” in his social work, and “life inspiring life” in his service. He believes in fostering virtue through education, and applying “perseverance, passion and patience” to his educational and other professional services.

First, “perseverance” means that teachers should persevere in their work and in educational reform in order to enhance the quality of Social Work graduates while promoting social work in their localities.

Second, “passion” means care for one's students, demonstrating this in one's teaching, striving hard for excellence, acting as a role model, and “fostering virtue through moral education” while promoting social justice.

Finally, “patience” means that the teacher or social worker does not let boredom or loneliness put off their focus on teaching and research. Sun Jiangtao has published 13 papers in journals such as Tribune of Study, China Social Work and Adult Education, has led five research topics of at various levels, and acted as chief editor for two textbooks. Patience also means offering services in a patient and careful manner. He is the council director of five social-work institutions and the supervisor of several communities, providing supervision and guidance and promoting the levels and abilities of these organisations and communities.

Sun Jiangtao spends his spare time volunteering in the community and promoting social work, training social workers and volunteers, and enhancing service to older adults and the ability of communities to operate autonomously. His work promotes governance in grassroots-level communities in Beijing and contributes to the emergence of civil society.

Since his arrival at the OUC, he has been conscientious as a teacher and role model, fostering the virtue of his students through moral education, and striving hard to produce sound research. He also assumes responsibilities that include promoting Chinese culture and popularizing science and other forms of knowledge as part of the spread of learning throughout society.
