Recently, the results of the selection of outstanding alumni of the Open University of China (OUC) were announced, recognising 328 alumni from various industries across the country.

These individuals, with accomplishments as their foundation and technology as their wings, demonstrate resilience, confidence, and a pragmatic, enterprising spirit, writing a unique chapter of progress of the OUC people. From today on, the stories of some alumni will be selected for sharing. By reviewing their outstanding deeds and listening to their life insights, the OUC’s achievements in talent development over the last 45 years are highlighted.

Xie Hu, who enrolled in the Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation major (with a focus on Electromechanics) at the Open University of China in September 2017, is a teacher in the Electromechanical Equipment Installation and Maintenance major at Beijing Industrial Technician College. He is a senior internship instructor and a senior technician in electrical maintenance, as well as a referee for the Second National Vocational Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China. He has won a silver medal in the Mechatronics event at the 45th World Skills Competition, and has been honoured with titles such as "National Technical Expert," "20th National Young Talent in the Workplace," "Inspirational Figure on Capital Campus," "Outstanding Coach" by the Beijing Economic and Information Technology Bureau, and has received the "Skill Eaglet" scholarship from Labour Publishing.

In September 2013, at the age of 15, Xie Hu, with a strong interest in machinery and electricity, enrolled in the Electrical Automation major at Beijing Industrial Technician College. During his studies, he studied earnestly and worked hard, winning the approval of his teachers. Later, recommended by his class teacher and course instructors, he joined the Mechatronics training team at the college. After joining the training team, he found that by assembling scattered parts and then programming through the computer, the equipment could be made to run automatically. The "charm of technology" deeply attracted Xie Hu and made him eager to explore further. Since then, Xie Hu has officially become associated with the "Mechatronics event" at the World Skills Competition.

Dare to Climb: Continuously Learning from Failures

The World Skills Competition, organised by WorldSkills International and held every two years, is the highest-level vocational skills event in the world, known as the "Skills Olympics." The Mechatronics event that Xie Hu participated in is a two-person event. He was responsible for equipment installation and debugging, while his partner was in charge of programming and debugging, and finally they had to debug a production line that met the acceptance and delivery standards of the World Skills Competition.

From the moment he entered the training team, Xie Hu was determined to cherish this hard-won opportunity. To meet the requirements of time, function, and process, he was so dedicated that he often didn't leave the training room until the administrator reminded him that it was time to lock up.

Hard work pays off. Xie Hu and his partner won first place in the school and successfully represented the school in the Beijing selection competition. Then, with the first-place result in the city, they represented Beijing in the national selection competition. The selection experience for the 44th World Skills Competition left a deep mark on Xie Hu's life. The selection and training enabled him to gain a great deal - expanding his knowledge, enhancing his practical ability, broadening his technical vision, and strengthening his willpower.

Breaking Out of the Cocoon: Winning a Silver Medal at the World Competition

After four days of intense competition in Kazan, Russia, Xie Hu won a silver medal in the Mechatronics event at the 45th World Skills Competition! His study and competition experience at school laid a solid foundation for his excellent performance and enabled him to realise his dream of becoming a skilled professional and serving the country with skills.

From 2016 to 2019, Xie Hu devoted himself wholeheartedly to the Mechatronics competitions, learning a great deal of knowledge and skills from coaches, teachers, and fellow competitors, which accumulated rich experience for his future magnificent transformation.

Glamorous Transformation: From Competitor to Young Teacher

After finishing his student career and his career as a competitor, Xie Hu became a young teacher. Since September 2019, he has served as a coach for the Mechatronics competitions, mainly training competitors in several aspects: work organization and management, communication and interpersonal skills, development of electromechanical systems, use of industrial controllers, software programming, electrical circuit design, analysis, operation, and maintenance.

Through his efforts, Xie Hu guided students Pan Chaoyang and Luo Zili to win a silver medal in the Mechatronics event for the World Skills Competition at the First National Vocational Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China held in Guangzhou in 2020, and they were awarded the title of "National Technical Expert." In March 2024, during the centralised assessment of the Mechatronics event at the 47th World Skills Competition in Shanghai, the students he guided won first place and became official competitors for the 47th Mechatronics event at the World Skills Competition. He also guided students Peng Kai and Li Haoyang to win the second prize in the Mechatronics event at the mechanical industry selection competition for the Second National Vocational Skills Competition in June 2023. Additionally, he guided students Peng Kai and Chang Yajie to win an excellence award in the industrial vision system operation and maintenance event at the 18th "Revitalisation Cup" National Finals.

Xie Hu has also served as the main teacher for courses such as "Electromechanical Assembly and Adjustment of Automated Production Line Workstations," "Prototype Trial-Production of Automated Production Line Workstations," "Teaching and Programming of Handling Industrial Robots," and "Electrical Drawing," and has cultivated 130 graduates, many of whom are engaged in key technical positions in central-level state-owned enterprises and large enterprises in the aerospace field.

Xie Hu was cordially received by relevant leaders and was exceptionally eligible for evaluation of the associate senior professional title. He said that he would use his strengths to repay the school for its cultivation. He will take his teachers as examples, sum up experience, and continue to carry forward the spirit of craftsmanship in his future life to cultivate more excellent skilled professionals for the motherland.
