On 24 November 2020, the 2020 conference to commend National Model and Advanced Workers was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Zheng Yucai, an alumnus of the Zhejiang Branch of the Open University of China (OUC), was named a “2020 National Model Worker”.
He is a student in the Administrative Management junior-college programme, class of 2018, at the Kaihua School of the Zhejiang Branch, and director of the Equipment Department of Zhejiang Xi-sheng Electronics. His previous honours include 2009 Kaihua County Model Worker, the 2011 Zhejiang Province May 1st Labour Medal, the 2013 National May 1st Labour Medal, and 2013 National Model Worker. Zheng was named a deputy to the municipal-level People’s Congress in 2017, and to the 13th National People’s Congress in 2018.
His hometown is Linli Village, Qixi Town, in Kaihua County. At 21 he began working for Zhejiang Xi-sheng Electronics, and became a front-line worker. Though he had only a senior high-school degree, and was employed as an ordinary technician, Zheng made up his mind to enhance his technical skills from the moment he entered the company, reading books and learning from more-experienced workers.
“Any profession involves both skill and responsibility. One should strive to do one's best, and remain calm and patient.” For over a decade, Zheng has worked to enhance his ability to test, fix and maintain new equipment. Since entering the company a decade ago, he has launched over ten innovative projects, and developed multiple practical technologies on his own, with fifteen patents claimed.
