Meng Qingchang is chief editor of the Operating System course within the OUC’s computer science and technology programme (undergraduate). He was born in 1944 and graduated from the Department of Radio Electronics at Beijing University. As a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Beijing Information Science and Technology University, he has taught this course for 27 years. He was previously deputy secretary general of the UNIX branch of the China Software Industry Association (CSIA), and deputy director of the Software Engineering Research and Development Centre of Beijing Information Science and Technology University. He is engaged in research, teaching and editing in all aspects of UNIX system and C language.
Professor Meng is one of the earliest experts to have engaged in the research and popularization of this field. He carried out or participated in a number of research tasks, including China Electric Power Research Institute’s “Analysis and Modification of UNIX” System”; the Department of Electrics and Mechanics “Computer Environments POSIX (POSIX.1)” (approved for CNS GB/T14246); the “Eight-Five” National Defense Pre-research Foundation project “Military Software Certification and Testing Technology”; the National 863 project “Object Management Prototype system”; the key national project “The Research and Formulation of Object-oriented Software Engineering Development Standards”.
Due to his outstanding contribution to education in China, Mr. Meng started to enjoy a special government allowance from the State Council in 2001. In 2004, he was awarded as a Beijing outstanding teacher.
Professor Meng is experienced in publishing and editing computer teaching materials. He has successively compiled, translated and edited over 30 books (officially published) and published many papers in domestic publications. Of these, Operating System Course: Instance Analysis of UNIX System V was awarded first prize for outstanding teaching materials by the Electrical and Mechanical Department, C Language and Application is one of the earliest domestic book to illustrate the C language, UNIX Course and Structured Programming of C Language were awarded second prize for outstanding teaching materials by the college, Operating System was a state-compiled textbook for national radio and TV universities, and Linux Course achieved wide public acclaim. At present, he is editing Operating Systems, which is a key project for higher education teaching material construction approved by Beijing Municipal Education Commission.
Professor Meng has been a teacher at GUCAS and CCRTVU. He has also recorded a number of teaching videos, such as C Language and Operating Systems, which have been released nationwide and broadcast by CETV. He also is a chief lecturer of the UNIX/Linux System Application course, which is an intercollegiate course for the university teaching community in the Xueyuan Road district.
